1. Procedures for separating ball joints that have a stud with a cotter pin are similar to those outlined for tie rods. See above procedures. These vehicles often use upper and lower
control arms and a steering knuckle with both upper and lower ball joints. Note that in most cases both the upper and lower ball joint must be separated when servicing ball joints.
2. Other vehicles may have a torsion bar or strut-type suspension using a lower control arm and a single ball joint. These ball joints typically use a pinch bolt to retain the ball joint
stud. To separate the ball joint, raise and support vehicle and remove wheel. Remove nut from pinch bolt and remove bolt. See figure e.
CAUTION: Always wear eye protection when striking the wedge-type tool with hammer.
3. Spray penetrating oil around the ball joint stud. Insert the tines of wedge-type ball joint separator around the ball joint stud and strike with a hammer until separated, making sure
to follow proper safety precautions. See figures f and g.
NOTE: It may take repeated blows of the hammer to disengage the ball joint completely.
NOTE: Make sure that sway bars and other attached suspension parts do not prevent the lower control arm from dropping far enough for ball joint stud disengagement. Check
factory service information for proper procedures.
