8. SAFETY DEVICES

TU16A emergency stop:
In any emergency situation, by releasing the "dead man"
lever, the up or down movement will stop immediately
due to shutdown of the compressed air supply to the
self-reversing cylinder.
Release safety feature:
The TU models are equipped with a double action
release device which requires a deliberate maneuver by
the operator in order to release the hoist.
Safety device limiting overloads:
All the models are equipped with shear-type safety
pins. In the event of an excessive overload, one or
GB
several pins (depending on model) located on the
forward operation lever will shear, inhibiting any further
movement. However, the lowering and release remain
GB
possible using the "reverse" operation lever.
Replacement of safety pins:
DE
Figures 11 and 12 show the position of the safety pins
on the various models. Remove the forward operation
lever. Remove the sheared pins. Clean the pin housings.
NL
Place the forward operation lever in position, lining up
the holes, and insert the new pins.
The shear pins must never be replaced by any
device other than tirfor
Contact your authorized TRACTEL
TRACTEL
company directly to obtain the shear
®
pins.
Before placing the unit in operation again, be sure that
the cause of the overload has been corrected. To avoid
any extended work stoppage, you should have a supply
of spare pins handy.

9. SHUTDOWN AND STORAGE

Before disengaging the hoist, you must remove the load
and release the tension on the cable. Disengage the
hoist, remove the cable and carefully wind it on its reel.
Store the unit (appropriately lubricated) in a dry location
sheltered from weather.

10. CABLES

To ensure safe use of the supertirfor™ hoists, you must
only use tirfor
®
hoists. These cables contain a red bundle which is
visible when new.
One end of the cable carries the safety hook mounted
on a cable loop equipped with a crimped lug in a metal
sleeve (FIg. 13). The other end of the cable is welded
and ground (FIg.14).

CAUTION
pins of the same type.
®
dealer or the
®
cables, specially designed for these
Safety will only be ensured by maintaining the cable
and the hoist in good condition.
The cable should be checked regularly, cleaned and
lubricated using a cloth moistened with oil or grease.
Do not use greases containing molybdenum disulphide
or graphite additives.
Visual inspection of cable:
The cable should be inspected daily when used for
any signs of deterioration (deformation, broken wires:
FIg. 15). If any damage is observed, have the cable
checked by a qualified person. Any cable for which the
nominal diameter has been reduced by 10% must be
eliminated (measure as indicated in FIg. 16).
CAUTION
For lifting operations in particular, be sure that the cable
length is greater than the travel distance to be used.
Provide at least one additional meter; this length should
come out of the casing on the anchoring side.
For lifting or lowering loads on extra-long cables, do not
allow the load to turn (to prevent the cable bundle from
coming apart).
Never allow a tensioned cable to rub against an obstacle
and only use pulleys of appropriate diameter. Do not
expose the cable to any temperatures greater than
100°C or to corrosive mechanical or chemical agents.
CAUTION
When using supertirfor™ machines with extensive
steel rope length (> than 80 metres), or with a haul
system, or with a retracting pulley, TRACTEL
recommends that you use specific steel ropes:
- for the supertirfor™ TU32A: supertirfor™ HD steel
rope - code 12311,
- for the supertirfor™ TU16A: supertirfor™ HD steel
rope - code 8921.

11. SERVICING THE UNIT

The unit must only be serviced with no load on the
unit and with its connections disconnected. Servicing
consists in cleaning and oiling the unit and having it
inspected periodically (at least annually) by an approved
TRACTEL
repair agent.
®
To clean the unit, immerse it entirely in a solvent bath
such as petroleum, gasoline or white-spirit. Do not use
acetone or trichloroethylene or any of their derivatives.
After immersing the unit in solvent, shake it and remove
any mud or other foreign matter. Turn over the unit
to eliminate any dirt or foreign matter by opening the
levers. Allow the unit to drip and dry. The mechanism
must then be generously lubricated by pouring oil (type
SAE 90 120) through the openings in the casing.
Before pouring oil into the unit, disengage it and actuate
the levers to facilitate penetration of the oil throughout
the mechanism.
