2. CONNECTING THE TARGA DATABOX
Starting up
Please read the user manual before using the device for the first time. This prevents incorrect operation and

Connection to mains electricity.
The TARGA DataBox II 250 is powered by connection to the mains. Attach the external power adaptor to the
housing (connection 5) and the electric cable to the power adaptor. If the power adaptor is supplied with
electricity, this is signaled by the LED on the power adaptor.
Always only use the supplied adaptor!
Connecting the USB Cable
The TARGA DataBox II 250 is downwards-compatible to computers featuring a USB 1.1 port. In order to
benefit from the higher data transfer rates offered by USB 2.0, your PC must have a USB 2.0 port or a cor-
responding adapter card for Windows.
To connect the hard disk to a USB port, proceed as follows:
1. Insert the flatter end of the USB cable into an available USB port on the computer.
2. Connect the square connector of the USB cable to the USB port of the hard disk.
Switch on the DataBox
Switch on the DataBox II 250 using the on/off switch (see Fig. 1, section 1).
3
The external hard disk has already been formatted for the file system NTFS and is compatible with
Windows XP / Windows 2000. If you want to change the file system (e.g. to FAT 16/32 for older Win-
dows operating systems) or you want to change the partitioning, proceed as described below
under "Set up under Windows 98/ME".
Windows XP/2000 will automatically detect that a new USB device has been connected and will install the
corresponding driver. In Windows 98/ME, you may need to install additional drivers if these are not already
installed.
In Windows XP/2000, your hard drive will be displayed as a new storage device in My Computer, with a drive
letter assigned by the operating system. The drive letter assigned depends on the number of disk drives you
have already connected to your computer.
The LED on the TARGA DataBox II 250 flickers if the hard disk is being accessed.
Fig. 4
The displayed capacity of your new hard disk will be slightly lower than the capacity printed on the package.
This is normal. For an explanation, refer to section 6 "Troubleshooting and FAQs".
After installation you can use your new TARGA DataBox II 250 hard disk in exactly the same way as any
other hard disks in your computer. The different applications of your new hard disk include:
Moving or copying files or folders from other drives, CD-ROMs, or other media
Saving and opening all kind of program files on the new hard disk
Saving video clips, games, spreadsheets or other data
Saving important data from you PC or Notebook (backup)
