Connecting and Removing the Hard Disk
The TARGA DataBox II 250 can be connected to and removed from the USB port while the computer and
the hard drive are in use (Hot-Swap). However, if you remove the hard disk from the computer without dis-
connecting it properly from the operating system, file damage or loss of data can result.
Removing the Hard Disk under Windows
1. Click the "Safely Add/Remove Hardware" icon located in the system tray at the lower-right corner of the
desktop (see figure 5).
A selection window will appear.
2. Select the "USB Mass Storage Device" (see figure 6). A message will appear, indicating that you can
now safely remove your device. It is also possible that you will not be able to remove your device at this
point. In this case, you need to close all open applications and documents and completely shut down
the system before you can safely remove the hard drive.

Formatting the Hard Disk
The following section describes the steps for formatting your hard disk as NTFS file system under
Windows XP.
Formatting the hard disk will erase all data stored on it.
Please make backup copies of all data prior to formatting your hard disk.
Because your TARGA DataBox II 250 is already formatted for NTFS, it is not necessary to reformat
the disk unless you want to change the file system or the partitioning.
1. Select Start -> Settings –> Control Panel (see figure 7a).
2. Double-click on Administrative Tools (see figure 7b).
3. Double-click on Computer Management (see figure 7c).
4. Click on Disk Management found under the Save icon (see figure 7d). Disk management allows you to
divide your hard disk into two or more logical partitions. For more information, press the F1 key to open
the online help, and search for Partition.
Right-click on the New Hard Disk icon in the popup window (see figure 7e).
5. Select the Format option from the menu (figure 7f).
6. In the File System field, select the option NTFS (see figure 7g).
7. When you are ready to format your hard disk, click OK.
