5. EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS FOR YOUR HARD DISK
Application Programs
Your new TARGA DataBox II 250 lets you install and execute applications like any other disk drive. When
connecting the hard disk to a USB 1.1 port on the computer, the data transfer rate will be approx. 12Mbit =
1.5 MB per second, i.e. fairly slow. Therefore, it is not recommended to install programs when using the USB
1.1 interface. However, you may save files for many applications and access them through the USB 1.1
connection. Most Windows-based applications that are installed on your hard drive will only run on the com-
puter on which the applications are installed. This is because when programs are installed, necessary addi-
tional information is often stored on the first hard disk. When you connect the hard disk to a different com-
puter, the program may fail to run. As soon as you re-connect the hard disk to the computer where you
originally installed the application, it will work again.
Video Editing
Computers are getting more and more popular for capturing and editing videos recorded with a digital came-
ra. Digital video files usually count approx. 13GB per hour of video recording and are quite big. The FAT32
file system limits the file size for individual files (including digital video files) to a maximum of 4GB. We the-
refore recommend that you run your TARGA DataBox II 250 with the NTFS file system (only on Windows
XP/2000). One of the advantages of NTFS is the capability for handling large files and partitions.

5. EXAMPLE APPLICATIONS FOR YOUR HARD DISK
Games
Games normally run faster when installing them on a hard disk drive than launching them from a CD-ROM.
You can use your TARGA DataBox II 250 for saving and playing CD-ROM games.
Installing a CD-ROM Game
Launch the game CD's Setup program.
When prompted for the type of installation, select "Maximum Install", if applicable. This will install most
of or the entire game on your hard disk.
When prompted for the install location, select an existing folder on your TARGA DataBox II 250 or create
a new folder. Due to the reduced transfer rate of USB 1.1, TARGA recommends not to execute any
games installed on a hard disk that is connected via a USB 1.1 port.
Saving Audio Files
Computers are also becoming very popular for playing audio files. They allow you to store and play most of
your favorite songs. Furthermore, the TARGA DataBox II 250 lets you create and manage a music library. In
order to be able to use you hard disk for saving a music library you must create a folder on the hard disk and
define it as default saving location for audio files.
Saving Copies of Important Data/Backup
You should back up important data at regular intervals. Reconstructing lost data is very time-consuming and
sometimes even impossible. You should therefore protect against data loss, e.g. in case the internal hard
drive crashes irretrievably. If you regularly also save your important data to your TARGA DataBox, you mini-
mize the risk of completely losing data and you have a second copy to fall back on if necessary.
