My computer shows a smaller hard disk capacity than the one indicated
?
on the package.
The hard disk capacity under Windows (e.g. 250 GB) is smaller than the capacity specified by the
!
manufacturer
This is because the manufacturers calculate the size by defining one Kilobyte as 1,000 bytes. But one
Kilobyte really counts 1,024 bytes. Therefore, the size of a 250 GB hard disk is: 250,000,000,000 bytes
corresponding to 250 GB (as defined by the manufacturers by dividing by 1,000).
However, the real size is:
250,000,000,000 bytes / 1024 = 244140625 Kilobytes
244140625 Kilobytes / 1024 = 238418.58 Megabytes
238418.58 Megabytes / 1024 = 232.83 Gigabytes
Windows would show this value (232.83 GB) as the size of the complete media
(e.g. in Explorer).
