Troubleshooting Chart

Symptom
Engine will not start or is hard
to start
Engine misses or lacks power
Engine runs, but pump does
not prime after being cleaned
after last use. (This problem
can usually be prevented by
following the recommended
cleaning and storage
procedure)
Engine runs, but pump does
not prime even though it was
working just fine a little while
ago. (Usually occurs after
moving or adding more paint
to the paint bucket.)
Pump primes, but does not
build pressure
Pump primes and builds
pressure, however, the
equipment does not spray or
produce a quality spray pattern

Possible Cause(s)
1. No gasoline in fuel tank or
carburetor
2. Low oil
3. Start/Stop switch in stop position
4. Water in gasoline or old fuel
5. Dirty air cleaner filter
6. Spark plug dirty, wrong gap or
wrong type
7. Spray gun closed
8. Other causes
9. Partially plugged air cleaner filter
10. Spark plug dirty, wrong gap or
wrong type
11. Check valves stuck
12. Suction Assembly loose and/or
sealing surfaces are dirty at Inlet
Valve
13. Suction Head not immersed in
paint
14. Prime/Spray Control is in the
spray position and/or the
Pressure Control is in the Low
Pressure/Hydraulic Bleeding
position
15. Hydraulic system contains air
16. Hydraulic oil level low
17. See Possible Causes 12,13,14,16
18. Clogged suction filter
19. Trash caught in valves
20. Paint sediments settled to
bottom of bucket
21. Prime/Spray Control not in Spray
position
22. Pressure Control not set to high
enough pressure
23. Even though Prime/Spray
Control is in Spray position, fluid
still flows from By-Pass Tube.
Prime/Spray Control is worn or
damaged
24. Clogged gun filter
25 Clogged Spray Tip
26 A. Tip is damaged or worn
B. Paint requires thinning
C. Reversible Spray Tip in
cleaning position

Corrective Action

1. Fill the tank with gasoline, open fuel shut off valve. Check fuel
line and carburetor
2. Check oil level. Fill if necessary
3. Move switch to start position
4. Drain fuel tank and carburetor. Use new fuel and dry spark plug
5. Remove and clean or replace
6. Clean, adjust the gap, or replace
7. Trigger spray gun
8. See engine owner's manual
9. Remove and clean or replace
10. Clean, adjust the gap, or replace
11. "Pop" Inlet Valve and Outlet Valves. See Preparation
Instructions
12. Remove Suction Assembly, clean sealing surfaces and
reassemble
13. Add more paint to bucket and/or adjust position of Suction
Assembly
14. Turn the Prime/Spray Control to the Prime position and Pressure
Control fully clockwise
15. Turn Pressure Control to Low Pressure/Hydraulic Bleeding
position for 1 minute while motor is running
16. Add oil so level is within 1/4" of housing edge. (See notes in
Maintenance Section on oil leaks.) Turn Pressure Control to Low
Pressure/Hydraulic Bleeding position for 1 minute

18. Remove suction filter and clean. Also, refer to Maintenance
section
19. See "Force Feeding" figure on page 27
20. Strain and mix paint thoroughly
21. Turn Prime/Spray Control to Spray position
22. Turn Pressure Control clockwise to desired pressure. Fully
clockwise is maximum pressure
23. Replace with service kit (See replacement parts list) or take
equipment to authorized service center
24. Replace with new filter. DO NOT attempt to clean gun filters.
Also, refer to Maintenance section
25. See Clearing Clogs section
26. A. Replace tip. Also, refer to Maintenance section
B. Follow paint manufacturers thinning recommendations.
Paint should not typically need to be thinned more than 8
oz. of solvent per gallon
C. Turn Spray Tip to Spray position. See Cleaning section for
details
