Installation of sensors

5.1

Installing EC sensor

For figures, refer to the fold-out page.
This point is only valid for PointGard 2100 EC
1. If the instrument is already in operation, activate the
function to change the sensor (Sensor change function).
Otherwise, a fault is displayed when the sensor is
deplugged.
2. Loosen set-screw, 2mm Allen screw.
3. Unscrew bayonet ring and remove blank or old sensor.
4. Insert sensor into the opening. The Dräger logo on the
sensor must point to the mark on the sensing head
housing.
5. Lock sensor with bayonet ring.
6. Tighten set-screw.
Mandatory for remote applications in zone 22
5.2

Installation of remote sensing heads

Depending on the explosion protection type, different sensing
heads are used. For installation of the different sensing
heads, refer to the corresponding instructions for use for the
respective sensing head.

Commissioning of the instrument

1. Connect the power supply cable to a current source.
 The instrument starts the warm-up phase.
 The display shows that the sensor is ready for
measurement in hh:mm:ss (countdown).

2. Wait until the warm-up phase ends.
Depending on the installed sensor the warm-up phase can
take between 5 minutes and 12 hours. Settings can
already be made in the menu.
3. Calibrate sensor if necessary.
4. Perform test:
a. Check transmission of signal to the control unit.
b. Check triggering of integrated alarm devices.
c. The optionally connected external relays

Operation

The instrument is not SIL-certified even though SIL functions
appear on the menu. HART is supported but the PointGard
appears as a Polytron 8xx0 to a HART controller. Please refer
to the Polytron 8000 Series manual 9033848 for more
information.

Display, analog interface and relay
status
The following display examples show PointGard 2100 EC.
For PointGard 2200 CAT gas names are not predefined. Gas
names can be entered. To enter gas names, contact Dräger.

7.1.1 Measuring mode

Display example
Description
In normal operation, the display
20.9
shows the measured gas concentra-
tion, the selected gas and the unit of
measurement.

7.1.2 Special states

If the instrument is in a special state, a proper measurement
or alarming can no longer be guaranteed.
This is the case:
– When the gas concentration exceeds the measuring
range.
– When a fault occurs.
– When alarms are deactivated.
The measuring function (display output and analog/digital
interface) remains active.
– During calibrations.
– During bump tests.
– During warm-up phase.
– During maintenance.
For the current of the analog interface corresponding to the
analog signal, see 17.2.
