18 Troubleshooting

18.1 Remedying Tiller Faults

Fault
Engine cannot be started. Insufficient fuel in fuel
Engine difficult to start or
engine power
deteriorating.
Engine overheating.

tank.
Main switch set to 0
position.
Inferior, dirty or old fuel in
tank.
Spark plug socket
detached from spark plug
or ignition lead not
properly fastened to
socket.
Spark plug dirty, damaged
or electrode gap incorrect.
Oil bath air filter dirty.
Engine flooded.
Carburettor iced up.
Water in fuel tank and
carburettor or carburettor
blocked.
Fuel tank contaminated.
Oil bath air filter dirty.
Spark plug dirty.
Incorrect fuel used.
Cooling ribs dirty.
Oil level in engine too low. ► Top up engine oil.
Surface of engine covered
in earth.
Engine speed too high.
Remedy
► Refuel tiller.
► Press main switch.
► Use fresh, good quality unleaded petrol.
► Clean carburettor.
► Clean fuel line.
► Connect spark plug socket.
► Check connection between ignition lead and plug.
► Clean or replace spark plug.
► Adjust electrode gap.
► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
► Remove spark plug and dry; set main switch to 0 and pull starter
rope repeatedly with spark plug removed.
► Allow tiller to warm up to +10 °C.
► Empty fuel tank, clean fuel line and carburettor.
► Clean fuel tank.
► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
► Clean or replace spark plug.
► Check fuel.
► Clean cooling ribs.
► Remove earth from engine.
► Reduce speed.
