DECT was defined as the European standard for cordless telephones.
The world has changed in the meantime: files are increasingly transmitted
as well as speech, both in the office and at home.
DECT has, however, made triumphant progress around the world at the
same time: it has been accepted on other continents because of its
universality, not only in Europe. The regulating authorities of Australia,
Hong Kong, China and the USA (under the name of PWT) have
standardised DECT for their regions, in different frequency ranges to some
extent. Variants of DECT are used in over 100 countries in the meantime.
