3.5 Explosion protection
The encoders are suitable for operation in explosives atmo-
spheres, in compliance with the following classifications.
3.5.1 Classification
The encoders with EX marking on the device meet the re-
quirements of:
• Directive 2014/34/EU for explosives atmospheres.
ATEX
Category (gas)
Category (dust)
Relevant Standards
3.5.2 Operating conditions
The increased hazard in potentially explosive atmospheres
requires the careful observance of the instructions and warn-
ings.
Explosion-proof electrical devices are subject to the stand-
ards of the EN 60079 series. They may only be used in po-
tentially explosive atmospheres in accordance with the provi-
sions of the competent supervisory authority. This authority is
in charge of the determination of the explosion danger and of
the zone classification. The ignition protection category and
the temperature class are specified on the type plate.

Make sure that the mechanical and electrical characteristics
such as e. g. rotational speed, ambient temperature, operat-
ing temperature, mechanical load or max. supply voltage of
the encoder in no case exceed the permissible manufac-
turer's specifications.
Note that, in the event of modification of the encoder with re-
spect to its delivery condition, the explosion protection certi-
fication will become void, e. g. dismounting of parts, different
use than stated in the description, mounting of additional
parts or modification of the thermal characteristics (e. g.
painting).
Standard EN 60079-14 in its most recent version must be
complied with for mounting and commissioning. Make sure
that, in mounted condition, the equipment has a sufficient
mechanical resistance.
The elastomers used for encoder tightness are subject to
standard EN 60079-31 (e. g. o-rings). As the user, you must
make sure that the sealing elements do not wear prematurely
or are not damaged because of impermissible influences.
This can occur e.g. by direct UV radiation or use of aggress-
ive media (acids) or sharp objects.
