Precautions.
- The
DCR.IT
should only be used to compare the injector back-leak volume of
diesel injectors on engines fi tted with COMMON RAIL injection systems.
- The handling of hydrocarbon products is hazardous and subjected to regula-
tions that must be strictly adhered to.
- Systematically use suitable personal protection equipment when handling
hydrocarbon products.
- Always use the
DCR.IT
in a well ventilated space.
- Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's procedures.
- If in doubt, do not use the DCR.IT.
- Never leave an engine running without qualifi ed supervision when the
injectors are connected to a DCT.IT.
Applications:
The
DCR.IT
compares the injector leak-back volume of diesel engines fi tted with
a COMMON RAIL supply system with electromagnetic injectors.
This comparison allows you to check off the injector balance and identify any
defective injectors.
The
DCR.IT
must be used in the following cases:
- Low Rail pressure.
- Poor engine performance.
- High fuel consumption.
- Excessive exhaust fumes.
- If the engine will not start and the Rail pressure is low or zero.
Installing the DCR.IT.
The
DCR.IT
can be fi tted to engines with 1 to 8 cylinders. For engines with more
than 8 cylinders, use multiple
DCR.IT
kits.
Connect as many hoses as there are engine cylinders to the graduated measuring
tubes.
Caution, ensure that the hoses are all of identical length. Cut to the required
length if necessary.
Caution: Great care must be taken when working on the diesel system of a Com-
mon Rail engine to avoid contaminating the fuel system. Follow the manufacturers'
procedures.
-Disconnect the return hose of each injector, plug the returns using either the
short lengths of hose included in the
DCR.IT
-Select the most
suitable end fi tting
for connecting the
graduated tubes to
the injectors.
If the returns were
fi tted with locking
pins, use these to secure the adaptors on the injectors.
- Connect the graduated tubes to the adaptors. Hang
the graduated tubes in such a way that the hoses are
free of bends and air pockets.
- The
DCR.IT
is now ready. Start the engine and check that the adaptors are well
sealed to ensure reliable measurements. Leave the engine running until the
level in the fullest of the graduated tubes reaches mid-height.
See «Operation» below, or refer to the manufacturer's procedures for the
interpretation of the results.
Before analysing the results, fi rst check that there is no air in the hoses. If air is
present, lift the graduated tubes until it disappears.
kit or a hose clamp.
-At the end of the test, pour the fuel from the graduated tubes into a hydrocar-
bon-resistant container.
Next refi t the return tubes and check for leaks before releasing the vehicle.
OPERATION
The leakage volume of an electromagnetic injector on a common rail diesel
engine is proportional to the injected fl ow rate.
Engine running.
The volume of diesel from the injector leakage pipes must be measured when
the engine is hot.
- If the injectors are operating correctly, the volume
delivered by each injector of a given engine will be
the same.
- If one of the injectors injects an excessive amount
of diesel due to wear, the volume of diesel delivered
by its return hose will be greater than that of the
other injectors. It should be replaced or repaired.
If the difference exceeds one graduation, one or more of the injectors are probably
faulty.
- If one of the injectors injects too little diesel, the volume of diesel delivered
by its return hose will be less than or much
greater than that of the other injectors. It should be
replaced or repaired.
Engine stopped.
If the engine will not start and the measured
pressure in the rail is low or nonexistent.
One or more of the injectors may be jammed open.
If this is the case, after having installed the DCR.IT, fi re the engine with the
starter motor several times. If the injector return hose delivers a large volume
of diesel, the injector is unserviceable. It should be replaced or repaired.

DCR.2: Set of hoses.
DCR.3: Set of adaptors.

Comments:
The
DCR.IT
is intended to be used with other diagnostic tools, such as an OBD
reader. Before concluding, the pressure upstream of the HP pump and the
electrical components of the injection system, in particular, must be checked.
FACOM
offers a specially designed range of tools for removing the injectors and
repairing the sealing surface of Common Rail diesel systems.
