General
These Assembly and Operating Instructions include important instructions and information
on the safe and efficient handling of the submerged motor, hereinafter called "Motor".
Personnel must thoroughly have read and understood these Assembly and Operating
Instructions before Installation or use.
The Coverco oil filled submersible motors are a machine component in accordance with the
"machines" EC guideline. You must not commission the motor until you have.
manufactured a complete machine,
met the safety requirements stipulated in the applicable EC guidelines and
confirmed this by a certificate of conformity.
2
Safety
The 4" submersible Coverco oil filled motor must only be operated in observance of the
following safety regulations:
Operate the motor only under water
Take into account the implementation limits of motor and units
Check the electrical system and fusing before switching-on
Protect electrical and mechanical danger spots against access
Vent rising pipe before commissioning in order to avoid water hammers when
starting-up
Provide a check valve in the pump or rising pipe (max. 7 m away from pump)
Water temperature with original motor filling not below -3 °C
Maximum water temperature +30 °C
With generator operation always unload the generator first, i.e.
Start: First the generator, then the motor
Switch-off: First the motor, then the generator
After powering the system check:
operating current of the motor at each phase
mains voltage with the motor running
level of the medium to be pumped
Switch off the motor immediately if:
Nameplate current is exceeded
voltage tolerances of more than -10% / +6%, compared to the rated voltage
on the motor are measured
dry run is imminent
3
Intendend use
Coverco oil filled motor are specifically designed for submerged operation as drivers of
variable torque loads such as pumps i.e.
Drinking water supply
Wells in domestic houses, waterworks and agriculture
Dewatering, pressure boosting, irregation systems
Supply of process water
Ground water heating systems
Maximum 30 starts per hour, allow 2 min. between successive starts.
The maximum submergence depth is 250 meters.
Improper use of Coverco oil filled motor, like pumping of air or explosive
media is strictly prohibited.
For required motor cooling, please consult motor nameplate etch. If
cooling flow is not sufficient, fit an cooling sleeve!
4
Transport and storage
Store the motor in the original packaging until its installation.
If it is stored in vertical position, make sure that the motor cannot fall over
(Its shaft shall be upturned!).
Do not store the motor in areas with direct sun radiation or other heat
sources.
The motor can be stored at temperatures up to 50 °C, the pressure
compensation diaphragm compensates the increase of the liquid volume in
case of high ambient temperatures.
5
Extending the motor short lead
The cable that comes with the motor can be extended by the customer.
Consider the details on the cable connection provided by the
manufacturer of the unit.
Only use extension cables and insulation material that are suitable
for the use (especially drinking water) and approved for the
temperatures occurring in the medium.
The electrician is responsible for the correct selection and
dimensioning of the cables. The table "Cable cross-sections" attached
serves as recommendation only (see Appendix pages).
2
ATTENTION
NOTE
EN
Properly connect the ground wire.
Protect the cable connection against penetrating water (shrinking hoses, sealing
compounds, or ready-made cable fittings).
Make sure that, during operation, motor short lead is always submerged in the
pumped fluid to ensure cooling.
6
Assembly of motor and pump
The Assembly and Operating Instructions only refer to the motor.
Further observe the assembly instructions issued by the manufacturer
of the pump!
Preparation of pump:
Apply acid-free, water-proof grease on the inner spline of the coupling
on the pump
Put motor and pump together horizontally so that they fit together tightly and
evenly.
Couple the motor and the pump together, so that the cable guard on the pump
and the cable bushing on the pump flange are in line with the connector output/
plug with motor cable
Put spring washers on the studs and tighten the nuts crosswisely (max 20Nm).
Observe the tightening torques specified by the manufacturer of the pump.
Check the positioning of motor referred to the pump as well as the clearance
of the shaft.
Mount a safety rope on the unit as fall protection for the motor/pump combina-
tion. Observe the assembly instructions of the manufacturer of pump.
Damaged motor and bearing!
If the connection between motor and pump is not in line, they can be
damaged during commissioning.
If installed in inclined position, always install the pump with
rising inclination towards its outlet side.
When the shafts are coupled and the screwed connections
are tightened, the axially directed alignment of the shafts
must be ensured
Ensure the radial and axial clearance of the motor shaft.
7
Electrical connection
Life threatening voltage!
When working on the electrical system, there will be the risk of
touching life parts.
Work on the electrical equipment is only allowed to be done by
electricians.
Before connecting the motor to the electrical system, disconnect
the complete system from the power supply and secure it against
accidental restart. Then check it for short circuit.
Pay attention to the details on the name plate on the motor and dimension the electrical
system accordingly. The examples for connection (see Appendix section) in this manual
refer to the motor itself – they are no recommendations in respect to control elements
connected in series.
NOTE
Preparation of motor:
Before assembly, turn the motor shaft by
hand. It must turn freely after overcoming the
cohesive friction
Remove the hexagon nuts from the studs of
the motor
