A problem in the fuel, compression, or ignition systems can cause poor starting, loss of
power, or other problems. The troubleshooting chart describes basic checks and possible
remedies. (This chart covers all Yamaha outboard motors. Therefore, some items may not
apply to your model.)
If your outboard motor requires repair, bring it to a Yamaha dealer.
Trouble
A. Starter will not
operate.
B. Engine will not start
(Starter operates).

TROUBLESHOOTING

Possible Cause
1. Starter components faulty.
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel contaminated or stale.
3. Fuel filter clogged.
4. Starting procedure incorrect.
5. Spark plug(s) fouled or incorrect type.
6. Spark plug cap(s) fitted incorrectly.
7. Poor connections or damaged ignition
wiring.
8. Ignition parts faulty.
9. Engine

10. Engine inner parts damaged.
11. Fuel cock is closed.
1. Have serviced by a Yamaha dealer.
1. Fill tank with clean, fresh fuel.
2. Fill tank with clean, fresh fuel.
3. Clean or replace filter.
4. Read "STARTING ENGINE" section.
5. Inspect spark plug(s). Clean or replace
with recommended type.
6. Check and re-fit cap(s).
7. Check wires for wear or breaks.
Tighten all loose connections.
Replace worn or broken wires.
8. Have serviced by a Yamaha dealer.
