4.3 | Installing an open chain

IMPORTANT!
Risk of damage!
• If the chain supplied is an open chain with a rivet master link,
only rivet the chain yourself if you have the necessary special
tools and specialist knowledge.
• Otherwise, always have this job done by a motorcycle
workshop (if necessary, a clip connecting link can be used for
the journey to the workshop).
• An incorrectly riveted chain can quickly wear or fail, causing
damage and injury!
Low-powered motorcycles (up to approx. 34 hp) usually have
a chain with a clip master link. Install this sort of chain with
the utmost care. The end plate and clip must sit tightly, so
installation takes a certain amount of skill.
The chain should be placed over the sprocket before the rear wheel is re-installed. Move the
rear wheel into position with the help of the wheel removal aid or a block, and insert the chain
adjuster. Now, insert the axle, if necessary using a plastic hammer, and screw on the axle
nut loosely. Now, place the upper end of the chain on the chain wheel, and tension it a little
by turning the wheel. Immediately afterwards, place the lower end of the chain on the chain
wheel, and turn the wheel far enough so that both ends of the chain rest on the chain wheel in
approximately the 2 o'clock position. Make sure that the pins and seals of the master link are
well lubricated, using the grease supplied with the chain. Fit the seals to the U-shaped master
