link (plate with two riveted pins), and insert it into the ends of the chain on both sides from the
rear. A special tool may be required to hold the chain ends together with the correct separation
for fitting the link. The open middle links of the chain have small "seats" on the outside for
locating the seals. Make sure that the seals slide onto the seats and do not jam, as this would
prevent you from pushing the end plate far enough onto the pins. The front seals are placed
on their seats and the front, well-greased metal plate can then be pushed on without it tilting,
using a chain tool. The drilled holes are very tight so that the plate rests taut on the bolts.
With a clip master link the grooves for the clip will now be visible at the end of the two pins,
outside the metal plate. Push the clip onto the pins with the closed part in the direction of pull
(pointing forwards on the upper chain run, or backwards on the lower chain run) – special
chain link clip pliers are particularly useful for this. Make sure that the clip is pushed into place
over its entire length so that it engages correctly in both grooves. An incorrectly fitted clip
connecting link can cause rapid chain wear and even failure.
With a rivet master link, the two ends that need to be riveted become visible outside of the
metal plate. They have to be riveted properly with a suitable chain tool. Various rivet links and
the appropriate tools are available. You must always adhere to the instructions for the chain
tool.
