Cleaning the air filter
Soiled air filters will reduce the engine
performance, increase fuel consumption
and make it more difficult to start the
machine.
If the engine performance declines
tangibly:
:
Move the choke lever (1) to the cold
starting position l
:
Unscrew the locking nut (2) on the
filter cover
:
Remove the filter cover (3)
TS 460
Clean the area around the filter and the
inside of the filter cover to remove all
coarse dirt
:
Hold the tabs (arrows) on the
prefilter (4) and pull it off the main
filter – the prefilter must be dried
before being vigorously knocked or
blown clean
A new prefilter must be fitted if the dirt
cannot be removed in this way.
Use two prefilters alternately.
5
:
Check the main filter (5).
It must be removed and replaced if
soiled or damaged
The auxiliary filter must always also
be replaced together with the main
filter.
:
Check the auxiliary filter (6).
Lightly tap it clean if soiled. It must
be replaced if damaged
Ensure that dirt cannot enter the
intake area when removing the
auxiliary filter.
:
Clean the filter chamber and refit all
filter components
:
Replace the filter cover
:
Retighten the locking nut
:
Move the choke lever back in the
opposite direction to the arrow

The quality of the filter elements used is
particularly important on account of the
special conditions prevailing when using
a cut-off machine (extremely high dust
loads and high dynamic loads).
6
STIHL air filters have been specially
designed for use in cut-off machines and
therefore meet the special requirements
imposed with regard to their mechanical
design, the materials used and the
manufacturing quality.
:
Extremely uniform pore size, folds
and strength of the filter paper
:
High compression strength and
dimensional accuracy of the filter
cartridges
