Initial Setup

Before you begin measurement, it is necessary to determine the system settings in the advanced
settings menu. You access the menu by doing the following:
1) Switch the controller on
2) Use the Up and Down arrows
come to the parameter Setup (if not already there).
3) Hold down for more 3 seconds to access the advanced settings menu.
4) There are three sub-menus to choose from:

System setup

• SLM serial number
• System upgrade

To exit the advanced settings menu, press C once you have gone through all the parameters in a
selected sub-menu.
System Setup
Choosing the Language
There are five languages to choose from:
1) Press OK to select this parameter.
2) Use to scroll through the available languages: English, Francais, Deutsch,
Italiano or Español.
3) Press OK to confirm your selection and proceed to the next parameter.
RPM Tolerance Setting
Type 3638 has predefined RPM trigger values (the RPM value at which sound level measure-
ment is triggered to begin), which differ for 2-wheel and 4-wheel vehicles. The general rule is
that a 4-wheel vehicle's trigger value is required to be at 3/4 the engine's maximum net power
(see the relevant manufacturer's specifications), and a 2-wheel vehicle's trigger value is required
to be at 1/2 of the engine's maximum net power. You will set the actual required RPM value
during measurement setup (see "Engine Speed" on page 19). Under normal conditions it should
not be necessary to adjust the RPM tolerance level beyond setting the measurement parameter,
therefore press OK twice to continue configuration of other parameter settings.
If, however, you experience difficulties in measuring RPM in the field, you may have to set the
RPM tolerance level higher than the predefined value. To do so, see "Setting the RPM Toler-
ance Level" on page 28.
