HOW TO USE
Timing Adjustment
First and most important, the advanced timing has to be adjusted.
Turn the engine to the correct advanced timing mark for the front
cylinder. If in doubt, consult your service manual for the correct
timing mark.
Turn the magneto head to the position where the breaker points are
just about to open.
Verifying contact opening with a continuity tester: connect the probes
to ground and the breaker contact spring. The moment the points
start to open, there will be a short acoustic or optic signal on the
meter. This method requires a certainamount of fine feeling, since
the coil remains connected. If there is no clear signal from the tes-
ter, the coil wire has to be disconnected.
Verifying contact opening with a digital ohm-meter: connect the pro-
bes to ground and the breaker contact spring. The moment the points
start to open, the meter will change form 0...0.2 Ohms reading to
0.5 Ohms. On closed contact points the reading shows the little re-
sistance of the points, whereas on open points the meter shows the
primary resistance of the coil. Adjust the timing to the exact point,
where the meter reading changes.
Verifying contact opening with a feeler gage or cigarette paper: a
clean .01 mm feeler gage or a thin cigarette paper is pinched bet-
ween the breaker points. The moment the gauge or the paper is just
free enough to be pulled out, is the moment of contact opening. It
is also possible to put the feeler gauge or cigarette paper between
the cam lobe and the contact breaker lever. Turn the magneto head
so that the gauge or paper is just about to be pinched. Both methods
are exact within 1° of timing. Fix the magneto head to the correct
position by means of the advanced timing adjustment screw.
Us the same methods to adjust the magneto head for retard timing
and set the retarded timing adjustment screw.
Now hook in the retaining spring on the rear magneto head stud and
the retard timing set screw.

Spark Plugs and Wires
Do not use carbon core resistor wires. Use copper or stainless steel
core wires. Use spark plugs with as little resistance as available.
The spark plug wires WW 12-339 and 12-424 are designed for use
with magnetos. Autolite spark plugs are made with little or no radio
suppressing resistance.
The recommended spark plug gap is .020" = 0,50 mm.
Carburetor and Exhaust
Since the engine is running permanently on advanced timing, you are
recommended to adjust the carburetor for richer idle and interme-
diate mixture to avoid pinging on acceleration. An adjustment of the
exhaust system will - in most cases - not be required.
External Terminal Connection on the Magneto
On the external terminal on the magneto only the following devices
should be connected:
• A kill button (WW 13-143).
• A kill button switch wire that is to be routed to the handlebar.
