These instructions explain how to correctly use your equipment. Only certain
techniques and uses are described.
The warning symbols inform you of some potential dangers related to the use of
your equipment, but it is impossible to describe them all. Check Petzl.com for
updates and additional information.
You are responsible for heeding each warning and using your equipment correctly.
Any misuse of this equipment will create additional dangers. Contact Petzl if you
have any doubts or difficulty understanding these instructions.
1. Field of application
This equipment is personal protective equipment (PPE) used for fall protection.
EN 795: 2012 type B removable locking anchor device.
For single-person use only.
Do not use this equipment as a means of hoisting.
This product must not be pushed beyond its limits, nor be used for any purpose
other than that for which it is designed.
Responsibility
WARNING
Activities involving the use of this equipment are inherently dangerous.
You are responsible for your own actions, decisions and safety.
Before using this equipment, you must:
- Read and understand all Instructions for Use.
- Get specific training in its proper use.
- Become acquainted with its capabilities and limitations.
- Understand and accept the risks involved.
Failure to heed any of these warnings may result in severe injury or death.
This product must only be used by competent and responsible persons, or those
placed under the direct and visual control of a competent and responsible person.
You are responsible for your actions, your decisions and your safety and you
assume the consequences of same. If you are not able, or not in a position to
assume this responsibility, or if you do not fully understand the Instructions for Use,
do not use this equipment.
2. Nomenclature
(1) Hanger, (2) Shaft, (3) Wedge cone, (4) Moving wedge plates, (5) Lockable release

Principal materials: stainless steel, aluminum.
12 mm version hanger: stainless steel (316L).
8 mm version hanger: aluminum.
3. Inspection, points to verify
Your safety is related to the integrity of your equipment.
Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least once every
12 months (depending on current regulations in your country, and your conditions
of usage). Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com. Record the results on
your PPE inspection form: type, model, manufacturer contact info, serial number or
individual number, dates: manufacture, purchase, first use, next periodic inspection;
problems, comments, inspector's name and signature.
It is recommended that you write the next inspection date on your product.
Before each use
Check the condition of the anchor: surface degradation, wear, corrosion,
deformation, cracks.
Check the condition of the wedge cone: surface degradation, wear, corrosion,
deformation, cracks.
Verify that the release plunger and its spring are working properly and are not fouled.
Verify that the moving wedge plates slide freely on the wedge cone. Verify that the
plunger locks properly (compare to a new product).
During use
It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its connections
to the other equipment in the system. Make sure that all items of equipment are
correctly positioned with respect to each other.
4. Compatibility
Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in your
application (compatible = good functional interaction).
The carabiner used with the hanger must meet current standards in your country
(e.g. EN 362 or EN 12275 connector depending on the type of application).
The PULSE 8 mm is compatible with VRILLEE and COUDEE hangers sold since
2018.
5. Installing the anchor
Check the quality of the supporting medium around the anchor. Make sure the rock
is solid and uniform.
a. After cleaning the area of rock to be drilled, drill a hole of the proper diameter and
minimum depth for your anchor model:
- 50 mm depth for the 8 mm diameter model.
- 65 mm depth for the 12 mm diameter model.
To make a round hole, use a perfectly straight drill bit with three or four cutting
edges.
Drill straight, without trying to enlarge the hole with the drill bit.
Use only a metric drill bit; do not convert from inches.
Warning: if you use a prexisting hole, make sure it is the proper size and in good
condition.
b. Clean the hole with a brush, then with a blower. The inside of the hole must be
dry; beware especially of the presence of grease.
c. Pull the plunger to enable the shaft to be inserted into the hole. Place the hanger
flat against the rock. Release the plunger and lock it.
Locking the plunger helps avoid any mishandling that could lead to unlocking; it
does not affect anchor strength.
d. Testing the placement:
After each installation, verify that the shaft is securely held in the hole. Verify there is
no play between the rock and the shaft.
Placement indicator: verify that the plunger is not in contact with the hanger
(sign of a hole that is too big, risk of poor hold of the anchor).
Warning: the locking of the plunger does not make it possible to assess the quality
of the installation.
Removal:
Unlock the plunger to allow removal of the anchor. Inspect the shaft before every
use.
6. Strength
The breaking strength values given were obtained from tests done in 50 MPa
concrete (high quality concrete, or rock). Common concrete has a weaker
compressive strength, about 25 MPa.
The anchor breaking strength values depend on the quality of the supporting
medium and on the quality of the placement.
Warning: anchor strength can be near zero in case of poor installation and/or
poor supporting medium.
Warning: in soft rock, the anchor strength may be reduced. It might be necessary to
use a longer or different type of anchor, and to conduct strength tests in the field.
If you have any doubt about anchor strength after installation, conduct an axial
pull test up to a maximum value of 6 kN (COEUR PULSE 12 mm) or 3 kN (PULSE
8 mm).

7. Precautions
An anchor should never be used alone; follow the principle of redundancy:
use two anchors in a complementary manner.
Always stay below the anchor.
Avoid prolonged use in a marine or corrosive environment.
Maximum load before deformation: the anchor undergoes irreversible deformation
above loads of 6 kN (COEUR PULSE 12 mm) or 3 kN (PULSE 8 mm).

8. Additional information

This product meets the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal
protective equipment. The EU declaration of conformity is available at Petzl.com.
- When the anchor device is used as part of a fall arrest system, the user must be
equipped with a means of limiting the impact force, exerted on the user when the
fall is arrested, to a maximum value of 6 kN.
- The maximum load that can be transmitted to the structure by the anchor is on
the order of 12 kN.
- For long-term anchor installations on a sea cliff or in any other highly corrosive
environment, the lifetime of the anchor is significantly reduced.
- You must have a rescue plan and the means to rapidly implement it in case of
difficulties encountered while using this equipment.
- The anchor point for the system should preferably be located above the user's
position and should meet the requirements of the EN 795 standard (12 kN
minimum strength).
- In a fall arrest system, it is essential to check the required clearance below the
user before each use, in order to avoid any impact with the ground or with an
obstacle in case of a fall.
- Make sure that the anchor point is correctly positioned, in order to limit the risk
and the length of a fall.
- A fall arrest harness is the only device allowable for supporting the body in a fall
arrest system.
- When using multiple items of equipment, a dangerous situation can arise in which
the safety function of an item of equipment can be affected by the safety function
of another item of equipment.
- WARNING - DANGER: take care that your products do not rub against abrasive
or sharp surfaces.
- Users must be medically fit for activities at height. WARNING: inert suspension in
a harness can result in serious injury or death.
- The Instructions for Use for each item of equipment used in conjunction with this
product must be followed.
- The Instructions for Use must be provided to the user of this equipment, in the
language of the country where the equipment is used.
- Make sure the markings on the product are legible.
When to retire your equipment:
WARNING: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after only one
use, depending on the type and intensity of usage and the environment of usage
(harsh environments, marine environments, sharp edges, extreme temperatures,
chemicals...).
A product must be removed and retired when:
- It has been subjected to a major fall (or load).
- It fails to pass inspection. You have any doubt as to its reliability.
- You do not know its full usage history.
- When it becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards, technique or
incompatibility with other equipment...
Destroy these products to prevent further use.
