III. HANDLING THE SEMITRAILER
1. Coupling the Semitrailer to the Tractor Unit
1. Before coupling the semitrailer, check that there is a sufficient coating of grease
between the coupling plate and the fifth wheel plate and that it is free from any
foreign bodies so as to ensure perfect coupling. Use an RAE or SUPER OIL EP2
grease.
If you have a tractor unit with a Teflon fifth wheel, there must not
!
under any circumstances be any grease between the coupling plate
and the fifth wheel plate.
2. Make sure the fifth wheel locking system is open (to open it, pull the locking
handle).
3. Use the props to adjust the height of the coupling plate to ensure that the fifth
wheel is not more than 50 mm higher than the coupling plate.
4. If the semitrailer has stopped because the handbrake has failed or been
applied, slowly reverse the tractor unit in line with the semi until the kingpin is
engaged in the fifth wheel.
5. Check that the kingpin is locked into the fifth wheel. To do this, test the traction
with the semitrailer's brake immobilised.
6. Connect the pneumatic lines.
7. Connect the electrical lines. Check to make sure the leads and pins are in good
condition.
8. Remember to release the handbrake before driving off.
9. Raise the props to a maximum at low speed until clear of the ground, then at
high speed for maximum. Make sure the prop stays in high-speed mode.
10. Hook the crank handle on to the hook provided for this purpose.
11. Make sure the overall height of the vehicle complies with European Directive
96/53/EC.
Before driving off, check that the brakes and the electrical system are
!
working properly. Don't move off until the pressure in the braking
circuit has reached a pressure above 7.5 bar on the pressure gauge or
on the indicator light in the tractor unit's control panel and the semi is
in the road position. It is essential to make sure the doors are properly
closed and that the stepladders are locked.
2. Uncoupling Procedure
1. Position the vehicle on a flat and sufficiently stable surface.
2. Lower the props to the ground in high-speed mode. When the base plates touch
the ground, change to low-speed mode to raise the semitrailer to separate the
coupling plate from the fifth wheel. Watch out for the prop limit stop. If the ground
is loose, insert a large wedge under the base plates of the props to prevent them
from getting bogged down.
3. Apply the semi's handbrake.
4. Release the fifth wheel.
