Electrical connection
WARNING
Risk of fatal injury from electric shock
The calibrator may only be connected to equipment that is not live.
Before the calibrator is connected, it is imperative that the five safety rules
are followed:
1. Disconnect the power
2. Secure against reconnection
3. Check for presence of voltage
4. Make earth connection and short circuit
5. Cover or block access to adjacent components which are live
When the calibrator is used in accordance with its intended purpose for calibrating a PD
testing circuit it must always be done with a fully assembled PD measuring system.
The calibrator must always be connected in parallel with the coupler unit (or coupling
capacitor) of the PD measuring system between the phase (red connecting lead) and
earth potential (black connecting lead) of the tested circuit.
Wherever possible, the connection should be made using the connecting lead
supplied. Connecting an extension to the connecting lead or using a different
connecting lead may increase stray capacitance and thus adversely affect the
measurement result.
The following diagram illustrates the electrical connection of the calibrator to the air-
insulated terminal of a medium voltage cable:

system
The calibrator may only be connected and
disconnected while the tested circuit is earthed. Before
starting calibration and actual measurement, however,
the earthing device must be removed again.
