12.13 CUTTING CORNICES
Your mitre saw is ideal for cutting cornices. In fact, it is usually the best tool for the job.
In order to fit properly, cornices must be compound mitered with extreme accuracy.
The contact surfaces on a cornice against the ceiling and the wall of the room are at angles to the cornice that add up to
exactly 90°.
Cornices often have an angle between the top (where it is flat against the ceiling) and the back of 52° and an angle between
the bottom (where it fits flat against the wall) and the back of 38°.
12.14 LAY THE CORNICE FLAT ON THE MITRE TABLE
See Figure 38.
To use this method for accurately cutting cornices for a 90° inside or outside corner, lay the cornice on its back flat on the
mitre table and push the cornice against the fence.
When setting the bevel and mitre angles for compound mitres, remember that the settings are interdependent; changing
one angle changes the other angle as well.
Keep in mind that the angles for cornices must be very precise and are difficult to set. Since it is very easy for these angles
to drift, the settings should first be tested on an offcut. Furthermore, as walls frequently do not meet at exactly 90°, you will
need to adjust the settings.

J. MITRE TABLE
The settings in the following table are for cutting cornices with 52° and 38° angles. For these cornices the bevel angle should
be set to 33.85°. The mitre angle should be set to 31.62° either right or left, depending on whether an inside or outside cor-
ner is required. Lay the cornice flat on the mitre table. The following table gives the angles and position of the cornice on the
mitre table.
