DESCRIPTION
ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE STEAM BATH
The ori gin of steam bath s is found in Greek civilization whe re th ey were
basically u sed as a
healing therapy for di seases and to stim ulate the
organism.
Later, The Romans, emulating the Greeks, adopted this form of therapy due
to its flattering re sults on the organism. With the geo graphical expansion of
the Ro man Empire during the e ra of conquests across th e cont inent, the
use of the st eam bath ge nerally spre ad to all area s whe re the re was a n
evident Roman influence. In Latin, th e steam bath was gen erally known as
"SUATORIUM".
During the e volution and development of the stea m bath, and in different
areas, different terms hav e been u sed, thus we can associated the steam
bath with:
- STEAM BATH
- HAMMAM
- TURKISH BATH
- ROMAN BATH
Throughout this pe riod, steam was generated though water boilers heated
by fire until t hey p roduced ste am upon boili ng. T his was conducted and
accumulated in the chambers to take baths. Temperature regulation was as
simple a s re ducing o r i ncreasing the amount of firewo od o r water to b e
boiled. In this way, the steam was spread throughout the chamber.
Traditionally when we think of a steam bath, the first graphic image is that of
a spacious chamber built on blocks of stone or covered with ceramic pieces
and decorated in Roman Style. In fact, it was just like that.
Today, the developme nt of modern tec hnology has contributed a series of
improvements in mate rials, com ponents and the ste am ge neration syst em
to this healing and relaxation therapy which have meant a real revolution in
such a way that look a nd con struction sy stem o f the steam
completely changed. However the basic concept, the effects and the results
have been the same since it was created.

The traditional objective of the steam bath is relaxation and physical and mental
well-being, and althou gh it has a serie s of po sitive effects on th e organism, its
main effe ct is not
accompanied by an appropriate hypercaloric diet.
