1.2 Indications and Effects
- Acute and chronic capsular ligament instabilities, ligament insufficiencies
and injuries of the ankle joints (upper ankle joint / lower ankle joint) as well
as severe distortions and lateral ligament ruptures
- Post-operative protection after seam or reconstruction of the lateral liga-
ments of the upper ankle joint
- Diseases and injuries of the peroneal tendons
- Inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases of the ankle joints (upper
ankle joint / lower ankle joint) with recurring irritations or chronic reactive
effusions
Specific indications must be determined by the physician.
The fitting takes place in 3 stages:
Stage I – Inflammatory stage (Fig. 1): The foot is immobilized in the neutral
position (90°) with slight pronation using the foot shell and the pronation strap.
Additional stability is achieved through the autoadaptive stabilizing ele-
ments on the sides. In this stage, the 50S8 Malleo TriStep cannot be worn
within a shoe.
Stage II – Proliferation stage (Fig. 2): After the initial function as an im-
mobilization orthosis in stage I, the foot shell can be removed during the
day. With controlled weight bearing, mobilization / activation comes to the
fore in stage II. For stabilization, the 50S8 Malleo TriStep is worn with
stabilizing strap and with the autoadaptive stabilizing elements on the
sides. At night, the foot shell is adapted to immobilize the ankle joint and
to prevent recurrence.
Stage III – Remodulation stage (Fig. 3): At the end of the healing process,
the stabilizing elements on the sides and the stabilizing strap are removed,
and the 50S8 Malleo TriStep can be used as support and to prevent new
injuries, e.g. during sports or other activities. As an option, the stabilizing
elements on the sides and the stabilizing strap can be attached, as necessary.
1.3 Contraindications
1.3.1 Absolute Contraindication
The orthosis is not suitable for use as a dorsiflexion-assist orthosis in case
of peroneal paralysis.
