3. Safety
3.1
Specified conditions of
use
This compound mitre saw is suitable for
cutting wood, plastics and non-ferrous
metals (no hard or hardened metals).
Do not cut round stock transverse to its
longitudinal axis without suitable jigs or
fixtures. The rotating saw blade could
turn the workpiece.
When sawing thin stock layed on edge,
a suitable guide must be used for firm
support.
Any other use is not as specified. Use
not as specified, alteration of the saw or
use of parts that are not approved by the
equipment manufacturer, can cause
unforeseeable damage!
3.2
General safety informa-
tion
Danger!
A
A sliding compound mitre saw is
a power tool which can, due to operator
carelessness, cause severe personal
injury, hence it is strongly recommended
you read and observe:
•
these instructions, particularly the
special safety information in the
respective chapters;
•
the
safety
enclosed red booklet;
•
the relevant guidelines or regula-
tions for the prevention of accidents
pertaining to the use of mitre saws,
where applicable.
Keep all documents, supplied with the
saw, for future reference.
The mitre saw shall only be started and
operated by persons familiar with mitre
saws and who are at any time aware of
the dangers associated with the opera-
tion of such tool.
Persons under 18 years of age shall use
this saw only under the supervision of an
instructor in the course of their voca-
tional training.
The following residual risks do principally
exist with mitre saws and can not, even
by employing safety devices, com-
pletely eliminated:

− Hazard generated by environmen-
tal conditions:
Do not operate the mitre saw in rain
or damp environment. Ensure suffi-
cient lighting. Do not operate the
mitre saw near inflammable liquids
or gases.

− Hazard to other persons in the
work area:
Keep bystanders, particularly chil-
dren, out of the danger zone.
− Hazard generated by machine
faults:
Check the mitre saw for damage
before any use. Do not operate the
saw with a faulty part. Replace dam-
aged saw blades and kerf plates
immediately.
− Hazard generated by an unstable
stand of the mitre saw:
Use suitable workpiece supports
when cutting long stock. Prevent
adverse body positions. Ensure firm
footing and keep your balance at all
times.
− Hazard generated by overloading
the mitre saw:
Use the mitre saw only within its lim-
its. Use mitre saw only as specified.
− Hazard generated by tools left on
or in the mitre saw:
Before any starting, check to see
that no tools are left on or in the
mitre saw (e.g. the retention pin for
blocking the saw spindle).
− Risk of injury by kickback of the
saw (the saw blade gets caught in
the workpiece, kicking the saw-
head up all of a sudden):
Cut thin or thin-walled workpieces
only with fine-toothed saw blades.
Always use sharp saw blades. If in
doubt, check workpiece for inclusion
of foreign matter (e.g. nails or
screws).
− Risk of injury by touching the
rotating saw blade:
Always keep sufficient distance to
the saw blade. Switch the mitre saw
off if not in use.
− Danger! Drawing-in/trapping haz-
ard!
Take care that no parts of the body
or clothing can get caught and
drawn in by the rotating saw blade
(do not wear neck ties and gar-
ments with wide sleeves; contain
long hair with a hairnet).
− Risk of injury by touching the saw
blade at standstill: Wear gloves
when changing blades.
− Risk of injury by inhaling wood
dust:
Dust of certain timber species (e.g.
oak, beech, ash) can cause cancer
when inhaled. Use a suitable dust
collector:
− air flow volume ≥ 550 m
− vacuum at the mitre saw's suc-
tion port ≥ 740 Pa;
− air speed at the mitre saw's suc-
tion port ≥ 20 m/s.
