III.3 GENERAL MAINTENANCE
III.3.1 CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL (FIGURE C)
- Change the oil when the engine is warm to ensure fast and complete drainage of the oil.
- Remove the oil filler cap 34 and the oil drainage plug 33.
- Let the oil drain completely into a metal container.
- Replace the oil drainage plug 33 and tighten completely.
- Fill the sump with new approved oil via the filler neck until it reaches the upper level on the gauge 34.
- Replace the oil filler cap 34.
III.3.2 MAINTENANCE OF THE AIR FILTER (FIGURE D)
If the air filter is dirty, air supply to the carburettor will be restricted. To avoid any poor operation of the carburettor, clean the air filter regularly. Clean it more frequently when
the engine is used in very dusty environments.
- Unscrew the butterfly nut D1 and remove the air filter cover D2. Remove the elements and separate them.
- Carefully check that the two elements are not torn or holed and replace them if they are damaged.
- Foam elements D3: wash the element with a household detergent diluted in warm water.
Then rinse abundantly. Or wash it with a non-flammable solvent or one having a high flash point. Leave the element to
dry completely.
- Soak the element in clean engine oil and wring out the surplus oil. The engine will smoke after the first start if too much oil
is left in the foam.
- Paper element D4: lightly tap the element several times on a hard surface to shake out the dirt, or clean it by blowing through with compressed air towards the outside of the
filter. Never try to clean by brushing; brushing will penetrate the dirt inside the fibres. Replace the paper element when it becomes very soiled.
III.3.3 CLEANING THE SEDIMENT BOWL (FIGURES G-P)
Close the fuel tap. Remove the filter bowl P1 and the O-ring seal P2 and wash with a non-flammable
solvent or one with a high flash point. Dry completely and replace. Open the fuel tap 31-42 and check
that there are no leaks.
III.3.4 MAINTENANCE OF THE SPARK PLUG (FIGURE R)
Recommended spark plugs for motor pump sets ST2.36H, ST3.60H and ST3.60HK í NGK: TYPE B-4H, BR4HS - NIPPONDENSO: TYPE W14F-U, W14FR-U.
Recommended spark plugs for motor pump sets TR2.36H, TR3.60H, XT2.42H and XT3.78H í NGK: TYPE BMR - 4A - NIPPONDENSO: TYPE W14 MR - U.
To ensure the correct running of the engine, the spark plug should have no deposit on it and the gap should be correct
- Remove the spark plug cap and remove the spark plug with a plug spanner.
- Inspect the spark plug and discard it if the electrodes are too worn or if the insulation is cracked or scaled. If the
plug is to be reused, clean the plug with a wire brush.
- Measure the electrode gap with feeler gauges. The gap should be between 0.7 and 0.8 mm. Correct if necessary by
bending the lateral electrode.
- Check that the spark plug washer is in good condition and screw in the plug by hand to avoid damaging the threads.
- After having hand tightened the spark plug, tighten it with a plug spanner to compress the washer.
NOTE: If you are fitting a new spark plug, tighten it ½ a turn with the help of a plug spanner after having screwed
it in by hand, to compress the washer.
If fitting an already used spark plug, after screwing in by hand, tighten it only 1/8 or 1/4 of a turn to compress
the washer.
III.3.5 REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER (MOTOR PUMP SETS ST2.36H, ST3.60H and ST3.60HK) (FIGURES G-Q)
- Turn the petrol tap 31 to the "OFF" position and disconnect the petrol filter Q1 from the petrol hoses.
- Drain the petrol from the filter into a container in order to eliminate water and sediment.
- Replace the filter on the hoses and turn the petrol tap 31 to the "ON" position.
- Check that there are no fuel leaks.
III.3.6 CLEANING THE MOTOR PUMP SET
- Clean the motor pump set with a brush and a rag (washing with a water jet is not recommended). Remove the dust and debris from around the exhaust silencer and the co-
oling fins.
- Clean the engine air inlets and outlets. Take advantage when cleaning to check the general condition of the motor pump set and change any defective or worn parts.
III.3.7 REPLACEMENT OF PUMP SEALS AND THE ROTOR
- A drop in water pressure or leaking seals can indicate wear. Please consult your agent if this happens.
03/2001
PRECAUTION: Exposing the skin for long and repeated periods
to used engine oil is a source of cancer. It is evident that the risk
is only slight unless you touch oil everyday over a long period of
time, however it is recommended that you carefully soap your
hands immediately after having handled dirty oil.
ATTENTION: Never use petrol or low flash point solvents
for cleaning the air filter element. It could result in a fire
or explosion.
PRECAUTION: The spark plug should be tightened
correctly. If the plug is poorly tightened, it could
considerably overheat and damage the engine.
10
PRECAUTION: Never run the engine wi-
thout the air filter. This will cause pre-
mature wear of the engine.
ATTENTION: If the engine has just been running, the
silencer will be very hot. Be careful not to touch it.
PRECAUTION: Never use a spark plug
with an incorrect temperature range.
