Filling and bleeding the steering system

1. Fill the oil tank with the prescribed oil up to the maximum level. Use type-specific, fresh hydraulic oil only. Fol-
low the instructions issued by the vehicle manufacturer. Dispose of used hydraulic oil in an appropriate manner.
2. Remove load on front axle by lifting it.
3. Perform two slow steering wheel turns from one end stop to the other while the engine is stationary.
4. Fill the tank again up to the maximum level.
5. Start the engine and make sure that the oil tank is always filled with oil to prevent air being sucked in.
6. Perform several slow steering wheel turns from one end stop to the other without generating high forces at the
end stop (risk of foaming oil).
For steering gears that cannot be bled easily due to unfavorable positioning of the cylinder line connec-
tions, bleeding can be performed prior to mounting the tie rods (on the wheel suspension) or the drop
arm. This only applies for ball-and-nut steering. Because the stroke can now be larger, the bleeding pro-
cess can be accelerated.
7. Check the oil level and refill the oil tank if necessary.
8. Do a visual inspection of the steering system (steering gear, cylinder lines and connections, oil pump).
9. Switch off the engine and check how far the oil level rises in the oil tank.
10. If it rises more than approx. 5 mm, the bleeding process described above must be repeated.
11. Calibrate front axle (see the information provided by the manufacturer)
