Steaming Guide

The times given on this page are for a single layer of food in the bottom basket,
used on its own. You will need to extend these times if two or three baskets are
used, as the same amount of steam has to heat a greater volume of food. The
further the food is from the source of the steam, the longer it will take to cook.
When steaming, be sure to fill the water reservoir to MAX level.
How to Steam Vegetables
When steaming vegetables, please follow these instructions:
1. Wash the vegetables. Cut off stems, trim, chop and peel if required.
2. When steaming different size vegetables at the same time, place the largest
and firmest in the lower steamer basket and the smallest vegetables in the top
steamer baskets.
3. If steaming smaller portions, the steaming time will decrease.
4. Freshness, quality and size of the vegetables as well as personal preference
will effect how quickly ingredients will take to steam.
5. Frozen vegetables should not be thawed before steaming.
How to Steam Chicken & Meat
Follow these suggestions for cooking meat and poultry:
1. Steaming guidelines in the chart below are for fresh and fully thawed meat
and poultry.
2. If chicken and meat are frozen, they should be completely thawed before
steaming.
3. Always clean and prepare fresh meat before steaming. It is recommended to
remove any fat and skin from chicken and gristle from meat before steaming.
4. Place smaller pieces of meat or poultry in a single layer.
5. Steam until the meat or poultry is well done. Check by piercing the thickest
part of the poultry or roast with a meat thermometer or with a knife or skewer
to check that the center is cooked and juices run clear.
