3-phase induction motors for
en
ATMOSPHERES containing EXPLOSIVE
GASES or GAS and DUST

MECHANICAL INSTALLATION

• The motors are factory-fitted with guidance labels which must be left in place.
• Before commissioning, drain any condensation water from inside the motors (see § "Regular servicing").
• Monitor the state of all lip seals and change regularly when necessary (1 time per year minimum for Ex tb and Ex
tc motors). After any work involving dismantling the motor replace all the weatherproof seals with new seals after
cleaning the parts. Where the shaft crosses, make sure that the seals are not damaged on contact with the key
entries and shoulders.
• The belts must be antistatic and flame-resistant.
• Protect the passage seals from light.

POWER CONNECTION

• Unused cable or duct entries must be replaced by screwed plugs of a type approved or certified for the group, the
application (gas or/and dust) and temperature class corresponding to those of the unit's location as a minimum.
Their fitting shall comply with the instructions in their instruction manuals.
• As opposed to the attached cable(s), the motor must either be connected outside an explosive atmosphere, or
be protected by a mode of protection adapted to the group, the application (gas or / and dust) and the temperature
class which correspond at least to those of the location of the appliance (see the indications on the motor
nameplate).
• The supply voltage and frequency must conform to those indicated on the motor nameplate.
• The tolerance is ±10% on the assigned voltage (1 single voltage assigned per motor) and the frequency
tolerance ±1%. Consult us for any other power supply conditions.
• For motors supplied by a drive: the tolerance is ±10% on the assigned voltage at the motor terminals. Refer to
the indications on the drive nameplate(s). The temperature rating was performed with IGBT drive, PWM
waveshape, min quench frequency = 3 kHz, open loop constant U/f. In the case of a drive with voltage drop and
continuous operation (1h min) in the 45-50 Hz frequency range, use T/Tn = 95 %.
• The choice of connecting cables must satisfy the installation rules dictated by the standards applicable to the
point of installation of the equipment, the current, voltage, length, temperature, "T.cable" (if present on the motor
nameplate).
• The connection must satisfy the installation rules dictated by the standards and the application of current
regulations and must be performed under the responsibility of a qualified person who must ensure:
- the conformity of the junction box (mode of protection Ex, IP, IK, etc.).
- the conformity of the connection to the terminal and the tightening torques.
- the minimum air distances imposed by the standardisation are respected; if the anti-rotation is not performed by
the connection element, by isolating each power cable ring terminals using a pasted heat-shrinkable sheath.
From each terminal, place the cables with their lugs in parallel to implement minimum isolation distances of
14 mm.
• The screws used to connect the cables must be the same type as the cable terminals or isolating rods (do not fit
steel screws on brass terminals, for example).
• Earthing of the main and any auxiliary motor is compulsory and must be performed in accordance with current
regulations.
• When the motor is fitted with auxiliary ventilation, this must be of a type certified by the group, the application
(Gas or Gas & Dust) and the temperature class must correspond at least to that of the main motor. The power
supplies to the 2 motors must be connected so that the powering up of the main motor is subordinate to the
powering up of the auxiliary motor. Shutting down the auxiliary motor must also shut down the main motor. The
installation must contain a mechanism that prevents the main motor from operating if there is no ventilation.
• In S1 service, 3 successive start-ups from cold and 2 from hot are accepted for the machine. The maximum
number of start-ups within the same hour is 6. In frequent or difficult starting conditions, motors must be fitted with
thermal protection (consult us).
• The thermal probes internal to the equipment, when mandatory (ensuring that the maximum surface temperature
is never reached), must be connected to a device
• To ensure that the maximum surface temperature is never reached, the thermal sensors fitted on the motor must
be connected to a device which switches off the motor. This device must be in addition to and functionally
independent of any system which could be required for operational reasons in normal conditions.
• Any reheating resistances (or reheating by injection of direct current or low voltage alternating current) must
only be supplied when the motor is powered down and cold; their use is recommended for an ambient
temperature of < -20°C.
• When fitting one or more vibration sensors or accessories (pulse generator for example) these should be
connected in a box. All of these accessories (as well as the box if it is not placed outside an explosive atmosphere)
must be of a type certified by the group, the application (Gas or Gas & Dust) and the temperature class must
correspond at least to that of the motor. Their fitting shall comply with the instructions in their instruction manuals
and currently enforced regulations.
• The motor supplied by a separate frequency inverter placed outside the zone or used where there is an
insufficient flow of air or which may be adapted to be no longer self-ventilating or fitted with an anti-drift device,
must be fitted with thermal sensors in the winding (all frame sizes), on the DE bearing, and possibly on the NDE
bearing.
• The bearings may be insulated electrically; their marking is engraved on the nameplate.
