This electronic device, specifi cally designed to facilitate vehicle parking, alerts the driver to the pre-
sence of obstacles at the rear of the vehicle when reversing.
Using this device shall not relieve the driver from looking in the direction in
which the vehicle is moving.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The rear parking sensor is based on the principle of sound wave refl ection when waves encounter ob-
stacles. Knowing the speed the sound travels at through the air, and measuring the time that elapses
between the emission and reception of an impulse train when it has been refl ected by an obstacle,
it is possible to calculate the distance of the obstacle from the sound energy source. In this specifi c
case, there are 4 available sound energy sources that uniformly cover the area behind the vehicle.
Each of these sources consists of an ultrasound capsule which also acts as a receiving element for the
refl ected wave.
An acoustic signal, common to all four capsules, indicates the progressive approach to an obstacle.
Frequency increases as the vehicle moves closer to the object until a continuous sound is produced.
SENSOR DIAGNOSTICS
This feature indicates the presence of one or more faulty sensors to the driver.
If any faults are detected after the system has been switched on, one or more audible signals will be
generated as follows:
•
Long BEEP with diff erent tone + 1 short beep = fault on sensor A
•
Long BEEP with diff erent tone + 2 short beeps = fault on sensor B
•
Long BEEP with diff erent tone + 3 short beeps = fault on sensor C
•
Long BEEP with diff erent tone + 4 short beeps = fault on sensor D
After generating the alerts, the system will restart with the faulty sensors disabled, and only re-sound
the next time it is switched on. If an anomaly occurs during operation, the control unit will interrupt
the standard obstacle detection signal and generate the diagnostics signal described above.
1. In physical terms this device, like all ultrasonic devices, has a corresponding dead an-
gle which, in this application, is generally located at the side ends of the bumper. It is
also possible to run into barely measurable objects for an ultrasound device, like very
low, thin or pointed bodies. It is important to realise that this device is a valuable aid
when reversing, but this should not allow the driver to an incautious use of the vehicle.
Assessing obstacles remains the sole responsibility of the driver, who must drive care-
fully and cautiously so as not to cause damage to people or property.
2. Reversing at high speed undermines the proper operation of the device.
3. The manufacturer accepts no responsibility for any damage to people or property due
to an improper use of the device or a faulty installation thereof.
