7. Operating the Leak Detector
This section gives a more detailed description of how to:
- Detect the presence of a leak
- Locate a leak
- Measure the size of a leak
Detecting and locating leaks is made using the Detection Mode.
Measuring the leak size is made using the Analysis Mode.
The third mode, Combined Mode is a combination of Detection Mode and Analysis
Mode. Using this mode you can detect, locate and measure the leak in one step. When the
leak is located — remove the probe, wait until 0.0 is shown and put the tip of the probe
right on the leak to get the measure value.
Detection Mode and Analysis Mode can also be be used separately. When you have
detected and located the leak using the Detection Mode — switch to the Analysis
Mode in order to quantify the leak.
See also Basic leak detection, page 9.
To Detect Leaks
If all you wish to do is to detect the presence
of a leak, i.e. find out whether there is a leak
or not, then use the Detection Mode*.
The definition of Leak/No Leak will then
simply be "A leak is a leak when it can be
detected by the detector, set to a specific
sensitivity".
To set up:
The operation in Detection Mode is not
quantitative. No figures are given but the
signal is still increasing and decreasing with
gas concentration.
*NOTE! The described working methods and necessary settings are
valid for Detection mode and Analysis Mode, either the modes are used
separately or as a part of Combined Mode.

Therefore, there is no actual calibration to
be done, but rather a setting of the sensiti-
vity to a desired level.
