Warning
When exhausting:
• Make sure that the swivel/gripper unit is not holding an effective load.
By doing this you can prevent a work load from falling suddenly.
Note
Fitting and commissioning is to be carried out only by qualified personnel in
accordance with the operating instructions.

Function and application
The swivel/gripper unit HGDS-...-B is a combination of semi-rotary drive and
gripper. When the supply ports 6 are pressurised alternately, the rotary vane in
the housing swivels backwards and forwards. This swivel motion is then
transferred to the gripper component 8, which swivels as a whole. Adjustable
stop cams 9 are used to roughly restrict the swivel angle. Adjustable cushioning
components 5 are used to finely adjust the swivel angle.
The speed of the swivel component aJ is regulated by means of external,
exhaust-restricted one-way flow control valves (accessories
www.festo.com/catalogue).
When the supply ports 7 are pressurised alternately, an internal piston is moved
backwards and forwards. A lever then transfers the longitudinal motion of the
piston rod to the gripper.
The recommended application of the HGDS is the gripping and swivelling of loads.

Transport and storage
• Ensure the following storage conditions are met:
– Short storage times
– Cool, dry, shaded storage locations protected from corrosion.
4
Requirements for product use
Note
Improper handling can result in malfunctions.
• Be sure to always comply with the specifications in this chapter. This is the
only way to ensure correct and safe product behaviour.
• Comply with the legal rules that are applicable for the location, as well as:
– Regulations and standards
– Rules of the testing organisations and insurance companies
– National specifications.
• Note the warnings and instructions on the product and in the relevant operating
instructions.
• Remove all transport packing such as foils, caps, cartons (except for the cover
cap 2 ).
The packing is intended for recycling (except for: oiled paper = other waste).
• Use the product in its original condition without any unauthorised modifica-
tions.
• Take into consideration the ambient conditions at the location of use.
English
Corrosive elements in the environment (e.g. ozone) will reduce the service life of
the product.
• Compare the maximum values specified in these operating instructions with
your actual application (e.g. pressures, forces, torques, temperatures, masses,
speeds). Only compliance with the load limits allows operation of the product in
compliance with the relevant safety regulations.
• Take the tolerance of the tightening torques into account.
Unless otherwise specified, the tolerance is ±20 %.
• Ensure that the compressed air is properly prepared (
• Maintain the selected medium for the complete service life of the product.
Example: Always use non-lubricated compressed air.
• Pressurise your entire system slowly. This will prevent uncontrolled movements
from occurring. For slow start-up pressurisation use safety start-up valve HEL.

Installation

5.1 Mechanical installation

Note
8
Excessive forces and moments will damage the HGDS.
9
• Make sure that the maximum permissible load limits are adhered to
(
13 Technical data and 14 Characteristic curves).
aJ
Note
aA
Special motion sequences result in a reduced gripping force.
• Please note that the gripping force can decrease with certain movements
(e. g. during swivel motion of the gripper component).
aB
• Select the type of mounting:
1)
Direct mounting
9
1) From the front, rear or side on a base.
Fig. 2
• Position the HGDS so that all of the operating elements and connections can be
reached.
• Observe the permitted tightening torques:
– Mounting screw M4:
– Mounting screw M5:
• Secure the HGDS using two centring sleeve and at least two screws.
• Tighten the mounting screws evenly.
