IP-Rating table - First Digit: Solids
The first digit indicates the level of protection
that the enclosure provides against access to
hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors,
moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign
objects.
IP0X No protection against contact and
ingress of objects
IP1X Any large surface of the body, such as
the back of the hand, but no protec-
tion against deliberate contact with a
body part.
IP2X Fingers or similar objects.
IP3X Tools, thick wires, etc.
IP4X Most wires, screws, etc.
IP5X Ingress of dust is not entirely
prevented, but it must not enter in
sufficient quantity to interfere with the
satisfactory operation of the equip-
ment; complete protection against
contact.
IP6X No ingress of dust; complete protec-
tion against contact.

Second Digit: Liquids
Protection of the equipment inside the enclosure
against harmful ingress of water.
IPX0 No protection
IPX1 Protection against vertically falling
drops of water e.g. condensation
IPX2 Protection against direct sprays of
water up to 15° from the vertical
IPX3 Protected against direct sprays of water
up to 60° from the vertical
IPX4 Protection against water sprayed from
all directions - limited ingress permitted
IPX5 Protected against low pressure jets
of water from all directions - limited
ingress
IPX6 Protected against temporary flooding
of water, e.g. for use on ship decks -
limited ingress permitted
IPX7 Protected against the effect of immer-
sion between 15 cm and 1 m
IPX8 Protects against long periods of immer-
sion under pressure
