4. Remove the catheter and apply dressing to the wound site.
5. Dispose of Ionwand cable and catheter safely.
Warning
Ensure that the Ultravision generator is switched off before removing the Ionwand. Failure to do this may lead to electrical
charging of conductive objects and create a risk of static shock to the operator.
Do not reuse or re-sterilise the Ionwand, trocar or catheter. Doing so may result in cross contamination, infection or injury to
the patient or medical staff, or damage the Ultravision system.
Dispose of the Ionwand, trocar and catheter along with other operative waste materials following the procedures for your
institution.
Advice
Removing the catheter as the last step in the procedure allows a surgeon to close the other surgical port sites without rapid
loss of peritoneal pressure.
Insertion of the Ultravision 5mm Trocar
1. Open the sterile pack and remove the contents using sterile field technique.
2. Remove the protective sheath from the Ionwand and check the integrity.
3. Insert the main obturator into the trocar and ensure correct assembly. Ensure the Ionwand obturator is in the
trocar and luer lock is secure.
4. Make an abdominal incision that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the trocar to avoid trocar instability. Insert
the trocar under direct vision.
5. Apply light and continuous, but controlled downward pressure to the obturator to introduce the trocar through the
abdominal wall. Ensure that the entire word ULTRAVISION is visible to the laparoscope inside the peritoneum.
6. When the trocar is in the desired position, remove the main obturator and the Ionwand obturator.
7. Fully insert the Ionwand and secure in place by tightening the luer lock.
8. Connect the Ionwand connector to the Ultravision generator.
Use of the Ultravision 5mm Trocar during surgery
1. Ensure that the Ionwand is free of surgical debris and not touching patient tissue or a surgical instrument.
2. Switch on the Ultravision generator.
3. Perform the surgical procedure.
4. In the event that the proximity indicator sounds when the Ionwand is not touching patient tissue or a surgical
instrument, perform the following steps.
5. Switch off the Ultravision generator.
6. Remove the Ionwand from the trocar.
7. Clean the Ionwand cable and brush filaments by enclosing it within a sterile swab moistened with sterile saline
and gently wiping it, moving the swab from the insulated portion of the Ionwand cable towards the metal brush.
Repeat until all contamination has been removed.
8. Re-introduce the Ionwand into the trocar.
9. Switch on the Ultravision generator and confirm that the indicator condition has resolved.
10. If the alarm continues to sound, replace the Ionwand.
11. Switch off Ultravision generator once surgical cutting is complete.
End of surgical procedure
1. Ensure that the Ultravision generator is off.
2. Remove the Ionwand from the trocar.
3. Remove the trocar from the abdomen. If port site haemostasis is not present, appropriate technique should be
used to achieve haemostasis.
4. Apply dressing to the wound site.
5. Dispose of all items safely.
