Generator output characteristics
The graph below illustrates the relationship between voltage and current at the end of the Ionwand cable.
The operating current is influenced by the distance of the Ionwand from the patient return path (patient tissue). As the Ion-
wand approaches the patient tissue the impedance (resistance) falls. This causes the current to increase and the voltage
to fall. The generator monitors the current and an active feedback mechanism collapses the current as it approaches 10µA,
which is the maximum DC current that can safely be applied to a patient. As a result the voltage falls below a level that is
sufficient to cause electrostatic precipitation. This is accompanied the proximity indicator, which informs the operator that the
Ionwand is touching or very close to the patient tissue and requires repositioning.
