Congratulations
l
Congratulations on your selection of the Vario 18 AC/DC c/i aspirator for use with the Invia
Wound Therapy. The QuatroFlex suction aggregate housed within the Vario is a patented
piston/cylinder system. The Medela Vario is user-friendly, requires only simple cleaning, and is
safe and effective for negative pressure wound therapy.
An extensive range of accessories makes the Vario 18 AC/DC c/i an ideal device for negative
pressure wound therapy.
Intended use
ll
The Medela Vario 18 AD/DC c/i aspirator is indicated for patients who would benefit from a
suction device particularly as the device may promote wound healing. The Vario 18 AC/DC c/i is
used as vacuum source in the Invia Wound Therapy in combination with the system components
and accessories listed in chapters XXV and XXVI at the wound healing indications noted below
using Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. The device is additionally indicated as simple drainage
system using the corresponding accessories for aspiration and removal of surgical fluids, tissue
(including bone), gases, bodily fluids (including vomit) or infectious materials from a patient's
airway or respiratory system, either during surgery or at the patient's bedside without a vacuum-
ization of the wound.
Wound Healing Indication
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy can be indicated for the following wound types: Diabetic/
neuropathic ulcers; pressure ulcers; chronic wounds; acute wounds and dehisced wounds (see
chapter XXIV for contraindications and warnings). Negative Pressure Wound Therapy is a moist
and occlusive wound treatment without the danger of accumulation of secretions. It can lead to
fast results during the treatment of the mentioned wound types. The Vario 18 AC/DC c/i is cha-
racterized by being able to create a predefined and controlled constant localized topical negative
pressure when used with a wound sealing kit based on the publications and teachings of Mark
Chariker, MD and Katherine Jeter, EdD, ET to promote wound healing and drainage of fluids and
infected materials from the wound into a disposable or reusable canister. This type of Negative
Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) using the Vario 18 AC/DC c/i with the NPWT components
protects the wound from infection and contamination and supports the wound healing process
even of therapy resistant wounds.
Safety instructions for the device
