Selecting the grinding wheel
A rough grain size is always recommended when the surface is unimportant. The rougher the
grain, the faster the material removal, which is why rough grains are better suited for large contact
surfaces than fine-grained abrasives. They are also the best selection for soft, tensile and tough
materials such as mild steel and aluminium.
A fine grain size is indicated when a high surface finish is critical. You should also select a finer
grain for smaller contact areas or to achieve small curves. Fine grain abrasives are best when
machining hard and potentially brittle materials such as tool steel or carbide.
Grade:
The degree of hardness indicates the relative holding forces of the bond that holds the abrasive
grains together in a grinding wheel.
Lower grade:
For hard and potentially brittle materials such as tool steel or carbide
•
For big contact areas
•
•
For fast material removal
Higher grade:
For soft material such as mild steel or aluminium
•
For small contact areas
•
For longer life time of the grinding wheel
•
There are nine factors that determine the selection of the grinding wheel for all grinding operations:
1.
The material to be ground - type and hardness
2.
The amount of material to be removed
3.
Workpiece geometry and surface finish
4.
What type of machine will be used. Note the type, condition and drive power of the
machine.
5.
Grinding wheel and infeed speed
6.
Size and hardness of the contact zone
7.
Wet grinding (with coolant) or dry grinding?
8.
Difficulty of grinding
9.
