FINDING DESIRED LOCATIONS
ON TAPE
VHS INDEX SEARCH SYSTEM
At the beginning
of every recording, this unit automatically
marks an
invisible index signal on the tape. These signals can then be searched
(INDEX SEARCH) to easily find the beginning of any recording. Do this
procedure on the remote control.
Preparation
Press the COUNTER
DISPLAY
button to display the operating
mode
indicator on the TV screen. (See page 38.)

Set the number of signals over which to pass.
Press the INDEX SEARCH button repeatedly to set a number between
1 and 9.
The current number appears on the TV screen.
Example @: To move forward from the current position in program
3 to the start of program 5, press the button twice,
Example @: To rewind to the start of program 2 from the current
position in program 3, press the button twice.
Select the direction of the search.
E9/F FWD~:
To search in the forward direction.
+/REW/@l:
To search in the reverse direction.
The unit searches through the tape in the set direction, and playback
begins after the set number of index signals are passed.
Marking index signals manually E
Index signals are automatically
inserted at the beginning of all recordings.
They can also be inserted
manually
(INDEX
MARK)
throughout
a
recording or playback.
During a recording or playback, press the O INDEX MARK button at the
desired location.
"INDEX
flashes on the TV screen while an index signal is being inserted
on the tape.
Erasing index signals E
Find the index signal to erase with the INDEX SEARCH operation. When
playback starts, press the O INDEX ERASE button while "INDEX
is lit.
"ERASE"
appears on the TV screen while the index signal is being
erased on the tape.
For PAL or MESECAM tapes, index signals should be separated by at
least 1 minute of tape (SP mode) or2 minutes (LP mode) so that the unit
can detect them properly.
For NTSC tapes, index signals should be separated by at least 1 minute
of tape (SP mode) or 3 minutes (EP mode) so that the unit can detect
them properly.
During an INDEX SEARCH
operation,
an index signal may not be
detected if it is extremely close to the point where the search began.
Index signals may not be detected on damaged or worn out tapes.
Index signals may not be detected at the beginning of recordings where
the tape speed is different from the previous program.
Index signals cannot be marked on unrecorded portions of a tape, or
on tapes without an erasure prevention tab.
