Application according to designation

2.1 Range of application

Category

Temperature detecting devices of the product-line SensyTemp MI and IS are simple electric
operating materials of group II, category 1 and 2 resp. 1/2, pursuant to the EC-Directive 94/9/
EC ( ATEX ) and DIN EN 50020.
Category 1 G: Electric circuit ia, temperature detecting device with simple low-potential circuit
Pt 100 or thermoelectric couple, without protecting well.
Category 1/2 G: Electric circuit ib, temperature detecting device with simple or double low-po-
tential circuit Pt 100 or thermocouple, with protecting well ≥ 1 mm stainless steel, resp. ≥ 3 mm
steel growing rusty.
Category 2G: Electric circuit ib, temperature detecting device with simple or double low-poten-
tial circuit Pt 100 or thermocouple.

Zones

The temperature detecting devices may be used without any danger in potentially explosive
atmospheres of the zones 0, 1 and 2, as components of intrinsically safe electric circuits. The
temperature detecting devices may be used with or without protecting well (separative ele-
ment).

Possibilities of use

While providing the use in zone 0, the temperature detecting devices have to be connected to
intrinsically safe electric circuits of the category "ia". In connection with a protecting well (sep-
arative element), wall thickness ≥ 1 mm stainless steel, resp. ≥ 3 mm steel growing rusty, the
temperature detecting devices may be used in connection with intrinsically safe electric cir-
cuits of the category "ib" in zone 0, too.

Group

The design test PTB 01 ATEX 2200 has been effected for capably explosive atmospheres of
group IIC in accordance with EN 50014:1997+A1+A2, EN 50020:1994, EN 50284:1999 and
EN 1127-1:1997.

Temperature category

According to the standards, the temperature detecting devices are marked by temperature
category T6. The case given, the present explosive gas atmosphere has to be allocated to the
temperature categories T5, T4, T3, T2, or T1, the temperature detecting devices may be used
at accordingly higher process temperatures.

Type of circuit

Thermocouples may be used as simple or double thermocouples.
Resistance thermometers may be used in 2 -, 3 -, or 4 - wire constructions. From a diameter
of 6 mm on, even two intrinsically safe electric circuits may be used in 2 - resp. 3 - wire circuits.
Here, it has to be observed that voltage and current have to be summed up. The sum of the
applied voltage may not exceed 30 V, the sum of the applied currents may not exceed 101 mA.

Installation in housing

In principal, intrinsically safe operating materials do not require a casing box. If, for the pur-
pose of securing the inherent safety, housing have to be used, the type of protection has to
correspond to IP 20 minimum. In the case of plastic housing, a material presenting a surface
9
resistance of < 10
has to be used. (DIN EN 50014). In the case of light alloy housing, the pro-
portion of magnesium has to be ≤6 %. The cable introductions in the housing mentioned above
should be allowed. Complete thermometers delivered by ABB meet these requirements.
