Battery maintenance
4
The BMW Motorrad communic-
ation system has three NiMH re-
28
chargeable batteries with a total
capacity of 1800 mAh. NiMH
rechargeables do not have a
memory effect, so they can be
recharged at any time. Charge-
control electronics prevent over-
charging: the charger switches
automatically to float charge as
soon as the batteries have re-
charged.
z
The batteries have to be fully dis-
charged and then recharged at
least 20 times in order for them
to achieve their maximum capa-
city. It takes from four to eight
hours for a discharged battery to
recharge; fully charged batteries
enable the system to operate for
ten to twelve hours.
To prevent premature ageing,
rechargeable batteries should be
charged at intervals of about six
weeks while not in use.
Rechargeable batteries have
a limited life of not more than
three years. When the batter-
ies fade appreciably and can no
longer hold their charge for more
than a short period of time they
can be replaced by your author-
ised BMW Motorrad dealer. For
safety reasons, use only genuine
BMW Motorrad rechargeable bat-
teries.
Incorrect charging can
cause damage to the
batteries.
Use only the charger supplied
or a USB cable to recharge the
batteries.
The USB connector that func-
tions as the charging adapter
tucks underneath your helmet's
neck pad. You can recharge the
batteries with this adapter con-
nected to either the charging
cable supplied with the com-
munication system or a com-
mercially available USB cable for
connection to a computer.
Disposal
Do not attempt to dispose
of spent rechargeables
and batteries as domestic waste:
bring rechargeables that can no
longer be used to an approved
collection centre or hand them in
to the retailer when you purchase
replacements.
