P L ATFORM PLUS DAMPING PERFORMANCE FEATURES –
S - T Y P E , S P L I T, RADIUM AND METEL REAR SHOCKS
Some S-TYPE, SPLIT, RADIUM and METEL rear shocks utilize Platform Plus
damping technology to eliminate excessive movement while pedaling. Some
piggyback models feature an external platform adjustment located on the reservoir,
while some inline models feature a red lockout lever located on the air spring side
of the rear shock. Maximum main spring air pressure for Platform Plus rear
shocks is 300 psi or 21 bar. For more information on these rear shocks, please

INTRINSIC DAMPING PERFORMANCE FEATURES –
REVOX REAR SHOCKS
Speed sensitive Intrinsic damping features separate low speed and high speed
external adjustments as well as preload, pressure (affecting platform and
compression damping attributes), rebound, and a four-stage, no-tools volume
adjustment to fine tune how progressive your suspension feels in the final 50% of
its stroke. REVOX rear shocks featuring the Intrinsic damper come with a titanium
coil spring and should be set up similar to the SWINGER 6-way coil rear shock
(see "Additional Adjustments for REVOX and SWINGER 6-Way Coil Rear Shocks"

S-TYPE REAR SHOCKS
S-TYPE rear shocks are ultra-lightweight and designed for cross country specific
applications only – not for extreme riding. The S-TYPE SRL features Platform Plus
damping with an additional lockout feature, while the S-TYPE SR SPV features SPV
damping and should follow the applicable setup procedures listed below. Maximum
main spring air pressure for both rear shocks (in the black Schrader valve) is 300
psi or 21 bar. For the SR SPV, the SPV air pressure range (in the red Schrader
valve) is 50-175 psi (3.5-12 bar). Never use a pressure below or above this
recommended pressure range.
SPV DAMPING PERFORMANCE FEATURES – SWINGER
AND S-TYPE REAR SHOCKS
Stable Platform Valve technology creates an efficient, firm platform to eliminate
excessive movement (bobbing) from low resonance forces such as pedaling. Upon
bump impact, however, the SPV valve opens to allow for massive amounts of oil
flow to eliminate spiking and absorb impacts. Since our rear shock does not over-
travel to absorb impacts, attitude and cornering stability are greatly improved
along with the overall stability of the bike. The ability to create an adjustable
platform without spiking or compromise in suspension performance is something
that we've found cannot be achieved with any other damping systems.
An additional benefit to the SPV system is that it has externally adjustable rebound
damping and platform threshold on all rear shocks, adjustable damping curve (via
a 16 mm socket) on piggyback rear shocks, and high and low speed compression
adjustments on 6-way rear shocks. Externally adjustable damping allows for any
rider to achieve the optimum set up for any bike, trail conditions, and rider weight
in minutes with no disassembly. Position-sensitive compression damping allows
for light initial damping and much heavier damping at full compression.
REAR SHOCK SETUP SCHEDULES
Please follow the appropriate setup schedule for your Manitou suspension
rear shock.

1. Set SPV pressure in red Schrader valve to 75 psi (5 bar).
2. Set sag.

4. Screw in SPV volume adjuster to obtain desired "ramp up" (piggyback only).
5. Set rebound adjustment.
SETUP INSTRUCTIONS – REVOX AND SWINGER COIL
REAR SHOCKS WITH SPV OR INTRINSIC DAMPING
1. Set SPV pressure in red Schrader valve to 75 psi (5 bar).
2. Set sag.
3. Adjust SPV pressure to set the platform to your preference.
4. Screw in SPV volume adjuster to obtain desired "ramp up" (piggyback only).
5. Set rebound adjustment.
6. Fine tune high and low speed compression adjustments located on your
reservoir bridge (6-way and REVOX rear shocks).
ADJUSTING SAG
Part of the beauty of SPV and Platform Plus damping technologies is that riders
can get outstanding pedaling performance without running the rear shock in an
overly-firm main spring setting. As such, SWINGER, METEL, and RADIUM riders
tend to run slightly more sag than with conventional rear shocks. The
recommended amount of sag for your riding style can be found in Table A at the
back of this manual. Remember that sag only sets the initial starting force required
to compress the main spring and does not compensate for a spring that is either
too soft or too firm for a given rider.
To set sag, measure the distance between the centers of the rear shock mounting
bolts (eye-to-eye length of your rear shock) and record this measurement. Next, sit
on the bike in a normal riding position near a wall to steady yourself. Without
bouncing on the saddle or pedals, distribute your weight on the saddle and pedals
in a normal riding position while holding the handlebars. Have a friend measure the
new distance between the two points described above and record it. Check this
measurement against Table B and determine the sag for you rear shock. Adjust the
coil spring preload adjuster or add/decrease air pressure in the main air spring (on
the fatter "can" side of air rear shocks) to achieve the desired amount of sag. Coil
rear shocks may require a heavier or lighter spring (see Table C) that can be
purchased to achieve the proper range of sag.
SPRING ADJUSTMENT – AIR REAR SHOCKS
To install air pressure in the main air spring, remove the air cap from the Schrader
valve located above the large air spring canister. Attach a shock pump such as
Manitou shock pump #85-4162 to the Schrader valve. You can damage the pump
by turning it on too far, so as soon as the gauge registers pressure, turn 1/2 turn
more and pump to the desired level. You can use the micro adjust feature on the
Manitou air rear shock pump to fine tune your air pressure. The hiss you hear
when unscrewing the pump is only the air left in the pump itself and not from the
rear shock. This does not affect your pressure setting in the rear shock. Likewise,
when you install the pump, the rear shock will fill the pump and reduces the
registered pressure previously installed in the rear shock. This usually is a 10-15
psi difference between what was in the rear shock and what the pump is reading.
This is all normal procedure when adjusting the air spring pressure. After removing
the pump, be sure to reinstall the Schrader valve cap.
SPRING PRELOAD AND SAG ADJUSTMENTS –
COIL REAR SHOCKS
Spring preload adjustments are done with the spring preload adjustment ring.
Adjust the spring preload adjuster up or down to achieve the desired amount of
sag. Never exceed 8 mm /.325" of preload on the coil spring. Always make sure
that you have a minimum of 1 mm of preload on the spring. If you reach the
maximum spring preload (8 mm) and the sag is too much, you'll need to go to the
next higher spri ng rate. If you reach the mi ni mum amou nt of spri ng preload (1 mm )
and there is not enough sag, you'll need to go to the next lightest spring rate.
Springs with varying, non-stock spring rates are available from Answer Products
for a fee. Par t numbers, spring rates and travel are stamped on the outside of the
spring coils. Coil spring and hardware kit part numbers are listed at the back of
this manual.
