General Power Tool Safety Warnings
WARNING
Read all safety warnings and instructions for use. Failure to observe the warnings
and instructions for use can lead to electric shock, fires and/or severe injuries.
Keep all safety rules and instructions for the future.
1) Work place safety
a) Keep your workplace clean and well lit. Untidiness or unlit work areas can
lead to accidents.
b) Keep children and other persons away when using the automatic die head.
Distractions can lead to you losing control of the device.
2) Safety of persons
a) Be cautious, pay attention to what you are doing and work reasonably and
responsibly. Do not use the automatic die head when you are tired or under
the influence of drugs, alcohol or medicines. Just one careless moment when
using the automatic die head can lead to serious injury.
b) Wear personal safety equipment and always wear safety glasses. Wearing
personal safety equipment such as a dust mask, non-slip safety shoes, a safety
helmet or ear protectors depending on the type and use of the automatic die
head reduces the risk of injuries.
c) Remove setting tools or wrenches before using the automatic die head. A
tool or key left in a rotating part of the device can cause injuries.
d) Avoid abnormal body posture. Make sure that you have a firm footing and
keep your balance at all times. You then have better control over the automatic
die head in unexpected situations.
e) Wear suitable clothing. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep hair,
clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothing, jewellery or
long hair can get caught in moving parts.
f) If dust extractors and collectors can be mounted, these must be connected
and used correctly. Use of a dust extractor can reduce the risks caused by dust.
g) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Carefully maintained cutting tools with
sharp cutting edges jam less and are easier to control.
h) Use tools, accessories and insert tools etc. according to these instructions.
Take the working conditions and activity being performed into consideration.
The use of the automatic die head for purposes for which it is not intended can
lead to dangerous situations.
i) Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles prevent
safe handling and control of the automatic die head in unexpected situations.
3) Service
a) Have your automatic die head repaired only by qualified technical personnel
and only with genuine spare parts. This ensures that the safety of the automatic
die head is maintained.
Specific Safety Warnings
WARNING
● If there is a risk of the workpiece bending and whipping round (this depends on
the lenght and cross-section of the material and on the speed) or at insufficient
stability of the machine a sufficient number of height- a djustable supports (REMS
Herkules) must be used.
● Only fix short lengths of pipe with REMS Nippelspanner or REMS Nippelfix.
● REMS thread cutting materials in spray cans (REMS Spezial, REMS Sanitol)
contains environmentally friendly but highly inflammable propellant gas (butane).
Spray cans are pressurised, do not open by force. Protect against direct sunlight
and heating above 50°C.
● Due to the degreasing effect of the cooling lubricants (thread-cutting oils), an
intensive skin contact has to be avoided. An appropriate skin protector has to be
applied.
● Do not allow undiluted cooling lubricant to get into drainage, water sys tems or
the soil. Remaining cooling lubricants have to be delivered to specialized waste
disposal companies. Disposal identity number for mineral-based cooling lubricants
54401, for synthetic 54109.
● Read and observe the general and special safety instructions applicable
to the power unit.

2. Operation
2.1. Setting up
2.1.1. REMS 4" Automatic Die Head on REMS Tornado (all types) (Fig. 2)
Take the tool holder off the REMS Tornado. Remount the oil tray and chip
trough. The two supporting rings (1) supplied already mounted on the drive
tube (2) are the same. On one side each has a centring collar diameter 68 mm;
on the other side each has a collar 64 mm in diameter. The 68 mm diameter
centring collar is needed for the REMS Tornado machines. The drive tube is
centred in the machine's chuck covers with the aid of the collars on the two
supporting rings. Inside at one end of the drive tube (2) there is a drive pin.
Make sure that the set screw (3) is screwed in the crosshole at this end but not
so far that it projects beyond the internal diameter or it will not be possible to
push the drive shaft (4) fully in. Both supporting rings must be in contact with
the chuck covers, and centred in the chuck cover holes with the turned collars
as described above. Insert the slotted drive shaft (4) of the 4" Automatic Die
Head into the drive tube (2), and mount the unit by means of the support casting
(5) on the front support beam of the REMS Tornado (see Fig.). Switch on the
REMS Tornado to check whether the 4" Automatic Die Head is driven. If it is
not, then – with the REMS Tornado running – push the unit further until the slot
in the drive shaft is felt to positively engage. Secure the drive shaft (4) by
thightening the set screw (3) on the right supporting ring.
Connect the cutting oil hose on the REMS Tornado to the suction hose on the
REMS 4" Automatic Die Head. Fit the feed lever (8) onto the square-ended
shaft projecting from the chuck (9). Lift the REMS 4" Automatic Die Head, and
suspend the chip trough from the die head support casting (5).
2.1.2. REMS 4" Automatic Die Head with REMS Amigo 2 power unit (Fig. 3)
Place the REMS 4" Automatic Die Head on a workbench or the fl oor. Unscrew
and remove coolant tube (14). Push ring-shaped section of support for 4"Auto-
matic Die Head/Amigo 2 onto drive shaft (4) and secure support with in hole
in coolant tube with hex. screw. Insert 4" Automatic Die Head/Amigo 2 drive
head into Amigo 2 (with locking ring). Mount Amigo 2 in such a way that the
guide on the drive head is installed on the drive shaft (4) and the drive head
follower is fully inserted into the slot in the drive shaft (4). If necessary, turn the
die holder (12) manually so that the drive head follower can be inserted into
the slot in the drive shaft (4). For thread cutting purposes, set the REMS Amigo
2 to clockwise rotation. For guidance on the latter, refer to the REMS Amigo 2
Operating Instructions.
2.1.3. REMS 4" Automatic Die Head on other manufacturers' machines
The REMS 4" Automatic Die Head can be used on all pipe turning machines.
However, the drive tube (2) must be extended by scre wing in a 1¼" diameter
tube so that it can be clamped in both chucks. For mounting instructions for
the 4" Automatic Die Head see para 2.1.1.
2.2. Thread cutting oil
NOTICE
Use only REMS thread-cutting oil. Perfect threading results, long dura bility of
dies as well as utmost preservation of the machine are achieved.
REMS Spezial thread-cutting oil is highly alloyed and suitable for cutting pipe
and bolt threads of all types. In addition, it can be washed off with water (officially
approved). Mineral oil-based thread cutting oils are not permitted to be used
on drinking water supplies in certain countries, e.g. Germany, Austria and
Switzerland. In this case, use REMS Sanitol which contains no mineral oil.
REMS Sanitol thread-cutting oil is free of mineral oil, synthetic, completely
watersoluble and has the lubricating qualities of mineral oil. It can be applied
