Appendix A – Clearfall
Clearfall is the distance required from the anchor point to the next lower level to ensure proper
deployment of a PFAS without striking the next lower level. This distance can be calculated by adding the
actual freefall distance, deceleration distance, dynamic sag, height of the worker and a nominal safety
factor. These terms are all defined in section 3.3 of this instruction manual. Typical maximum values for
each of these factors is shown in the chart below.

In order to calculate the clearfall distance for your application, use the worksheet below. Use the
column that describes the deceleration device/fall arrestor that you are using and fill in the missing values
for dynamic sag which is your actual horizontal lifeline span multiplied by .1 (example: for a 40' span, 40 x
.1 = 4' for your actual dynamic sag). Also include the height of the tallest worker utilizing the system. Add
the actual values in each of the five rows in your chosen column: The result is your minimum clearfall
distance.
