Operating instructions

Initial lighting

the Jøtul F 220 is a clean-burning product that, with the
help of secondary combustion, ensures that hazardous
gases and particles are burnt. It is important for the system
to be used correctly.
the product is equipped with the following control
mechanism:
• Top draught
When kindling the fire, open up the top draught vent. Put
in some crumpled newspaper, kindling wood and firewood
and start a small fire. Add more firewood gradually and let
the fire burn briskly for a couple of hours.
Note! Odors when using the stove for the first time.
Painted products: the stove may emit an irritating gas
when used for the first time, and it may smell a little. the
gas is not toxic, but it is recommended to open a window
or a door to provide additional ventilation in the room. Let
the fire burn with a high draught until all traces of gas have
disappeared and no smoke or smells can be detected.
Enamelled products: Condensation may form on the surface
of the stove the first few times it is used. this must be
wiped off to prevent permanent stains forming when the
surface heats up.
Daily use (see fig. 7)
Open up the top draught vent. Light up using newspaper
and some kindling wood. Place two medium-sized pieces
of wood on each side of the combustion chamber. Curl
up some newspaper (or birch bark) between these, place
a little kindling wood in a criss-cross pattern over it and
light the fire. Increase its size gradually.
the door should be closed when the wood is properly alight
and is burning well. Check that the afterburning (secondary
combustion) starts up. this is best seen by checking for
yellow flame tongues burning by the baffle plate.
Always use quality wood. this will give the best result and
will not damage the product during normal use.
Never use the following on the fire:
– Household waste.
– Painted or impregnated timber (which is very toxic).
– Particle board or laminated wooden planks.
– Driftwood.
These may damage the product and are also pollutants.
NB! Never use petrol, paraffin, methylated spirits or similar
liquids to start a fire. this could cause personal injury and
damage to the product.
Note! Danger of overheating: the stove must never be used
in a manner that causes overheating.
If any part of the stove or chimney glows, you are
overheating, and a house fire or serious damage to the
stove or chimney could be the result.
the chimney draught should never exceed 2,5 mm H
(25 Pa) when the stove is in use. A sure sign of overheating
is when parts of the stove glows red. When this happens,
reduce the draught vent opening immediately.
Attention! Firewood that is put into the fire must burn
down to charcoal before reloading. this will reduce the
danger of overheating.
