9 Using the PC Software Interface to set up the Elan
Getting started:
The Elan is a biomimetic foot and ankle system with microprocessor control for
plantar and dorsiflexion resistance. This device is designed to adapt dynamically
to provide assistance when walking and standing on a variety of surfaces and
changing gait speeds.
To set up the ankle resistance setting to an individual user preference the Elan
control system is adjusted and calibrated with the PC interface via a Bluetooth® link.
The final walking calibration routine is used by the computer program in the Elan to
adapt to gait characteristics after the alignment and resistance settings have been
optimized. This calibration data is then used by the Elan software to recognize and
adapt the Elan automatically to changing walking and daily living patterns.
Set-up procedure:
1 Ensure the Elan batteries are charged (see Section 6).
2 Complete the Bench Alignment for the Elan (see Section 7).
3 Install the PC software interface (see Section 8) on a Microsoft Windows computer
or remote device with a Bluetooth® capability.
Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on the computer/remote device and disconnected to
any other device.
4 Connect the Elan Bluetooth® Dongle to the Elan and ensure the blue LED is
flashing ready to connect.
Pair the Elan Dongle to your computer/remote device using the Bluetooth®
manager program on your computer.
If prompted during installation enter pair code > 1234.
Or you may be asked to confirm an ID code of the Elan Bluetooth dongle when
connected > Yes
After pairing disconnect the Dongle.
If Bluetooth connection is not possible use a direct connection with the Comms
Cable (USB). See procedure on the following page.
5 Carry out the Elan Alignment, Set-up and Calibration procedure using the PC
interface controls with the user walking on a horizontal and level surface
(See procedure on the following pages).
