of pressure must be calculated to ensure a pressure of 0.15 N/mm² at the joint
faces. Pressure F is calculated from the product of adapting pressure p and
pipe face area A (F = p · A), i.e. the greater the pipe face area, the higher the
pressure required. Thus, a pipe of e.g. 110 mm diameter and SDR 33 (s = 3.4 mm)
gives a pipe face area of 1140 mm² and a requisite adapting pressure of F = 0.15
N/mm² · 1140 mm² = 170 N. A pressure data plate (37) is attached to each
machine containing a table indicating which pipes can be welded, up to what
pressure stage, and under how much pressure, with the machine concerned.
Figs. 10 to 13 show these tables for the REMS SSM models 160 RS, 160 KS,
250 KS and 315 RF. Take the value of the requisite adapting pressure from the
respective table (Fig. 9 and 16) and apply with the jointing lever (7). When the
joint faces are pressed together by means of the jointing lever, the applied
pressure can be seen by reference to the pointer (38).
Before welding takes place, a check must be made to ensure that the clamps
are holding the pipe sections sufficiently securely to enable them, as a minimum,
to absorb the necessary pressure. For this purpose, bring the pipe ends together
cold and apply at least the calculated pressure by means of the jointing lever
(7) on a trial basis. If the clamps do not hold the pipe sections securely, the
clamping cams (35) must be readjusted (see 3.4.).
The adapting process is concluded when a bulge, which is at least as high as
the figure given in Fig. 14, column 2, has formed around the entire circumfer-
ence of the pipe sections.
3.5.2. Heating
For the heating process, the pressure is reduced to almost zero. The heat ing
period is given in Fig. 14, column 3. During the heating process, the heat
penetrates into the joint faces, raising them to the necessary welding temper-
ature.
3.5.3. Changeover
After heating, the joint faces shoud be withdrawn from the heating element,
which is then retracted without touching the heated faces. These are then
rapidly brought together until just before they touch. The switchover time may
not exceed the times specified in Fig. 14, column 4 otherwise the joint faces
will cool down to impermissible temperatures.
3.5.4. Joining and welding
The joint faces must be barely moving when brought into contact with each
other. The contact pressure should be uniformly increased to 0.15 N/mm² (DVS
2207, Part 1) and must be maintained during the cooling-off period (Fig. 14,
column 5). The jointing lever (7) is secured with the clamping lever/knob (39)
during the cooling-off period. The requisite pressure, as described under 3.5.1.,
should be taken from the tables in Figs. 9 and 16. After the joint has been
completed, a uniform, double bulge must have formed around the en tire
circumference. The shape of the bulge gives an initial indication as to the
uniformity of the weld. Dimension K of the bulge (Fig. 15) must always be
greater than 0, i.e. the bulge must project beyond the circumference of the pipe
all round.
5. Behaviour in the event of faults
5.1. Fault: Heating element butt welding unit (5) does not heat up.
Cause:
● Plug of the heating element butt welding unit not plugged into the outlet.
● Mains lead defective.
● Plug socket (23) defective.
● Device defective.
● Outlet defective.
5.2. Fault: Plastic residue sticks to the heating element butt welding unit (5).
Cause:
● Heating element soiled.
● Anti-adhesive coating damaged.
● Wrong welding temperature set.
5.3. Fault: Electric facing cutter (6) does not start.
Cause:
● Electric facing cutter not in working position.
● Mains lead defective.
● Worn carbon brushes.
● Device defective.

3.5.5. Releasing the welded pipe
At the conclusion of the cooling-off period, the clamping lever/knob (39), by
which the jointing lever (7) is secured, must be released before the clamps are
opened, so that the contact pressure can be slowly relieved without ad verse ly
affecting the welded seam. The clamping lever (36) can then be opened and
the welded pipe removed from the machine. Allow the welded seam to cool
naturally, i.e. do not accelerate the cooling process with water, cold air or similar.

4. Maintenance
CAUTION
Only touch the heating element butt welding unit (5) on the handle (16)
or grip (18)! The heating element as well as the metal parts between the heating
element and the handle reach operating temperatures of up to 300°C. Touching
these parts can cause severe burns.
4.1. Maintenance
WARNING
Pull out the mains plug before maintenance work!
If the machine is exposed to heavy contamination, the spars on which the
moving slides or the heating element butt welding unit (5) and facing cutter (6)
move must be cleaned and greased from time to time.
The anti-adhesive coating of the heating element butt welding unit (5) must be
cleaned with lint-free paper or cloth and technical alcohol before every welding
process. Plastic residue stuck to the heating element must be removed imme-
diately with lint-free paper or cloth and technical alcohol. Make absolutely certain
that the anti-adhesive coating of the heating element is not damaged by the
use of tools. The use of white spirit to clean the heating element can lead to a
diminished quality of the weld due to the water that it contains.
Clean plastic parts (e.g. housing) only with the REMS CleanM machine cleaner
(Art. No. 140119) or a mild soap and a damp cloth. Do not use household
cleaners These often contain chemicals which can damage the plastic parts.
Never use petrol, turpentine, thinner or similar products to clean plastic parts.
Make sure that liquids never get inside the electrical devices of the machine.
4.2. lnspection/repairs
WARNING
Pull out the mains plug before carrying out maintenance or repair work!
This work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
The gear of the facing cutter runs in a life-long grease filling and therefore needs
no lubrication. The motor of the facing cutter has carbon brushes. These wear
and must therefore be checked and renewed from time to time. Only use
original REMS carbon brushes.
Remedy:
● Plug the plug into the plug socket (23) or mains lead into an outlet which
matches the mains voltage and protection class specified on the rating plate
and is protected by a 30 mA fault current protection device (FI switch).
● Have the mains lead replaced by qualified personnel or an authorised REMS
customer service workshop.
● Have the plug socket (23) changed by qualified personnel or an authorised
REMS customer service workshop.
● Have the device checked/repaired by an authorised REMS customer service
workshop.
● Have the outlet changed by qualified personnel or an authorised REMS
customer service workshop.
Remedy:
● Clean the heating element, see 4.1.
● Replace damaged heating element butt welding unit with a new one.
● Observe manufacturer information of pipes and mouldings. Set the tempera-
ture at the temperature setting screw (26) (see 2.6.).
Remedy:
● Swing facing cutter in fully so that the limit switch is pressed by the spar.
● Have the mains lead replaced by qualified personnel or an authorised REMS
customer service workshop.
● Have the carbon brushes changed by qualified personnel or an authorised
REMS customer service workshop.
● Have the device checked/repaired by an authorised REMS customer service
workshop.
