Overview

The VSR-1000 Media Control Unit is the nucleus of
the Sony VideoStore ™ system for storage and
playback of audio/video information subjected to
MPEG-2 compression and encoding. In combination
with the VST-1000/1000P MPEG-2 Encoding Unit,

Features

Realtime loading
The unit receives an MPEG-2 bitstream encoded in
realtime (30 frames per second) from the VST-1000/
1000P Encoding Unit, and makes high-speed transfers
to the VSH-1000 Media Unit for data storage on hard
disk.
High storage capacity
A maximum of seven VSH-1000 Media Units can be
connected to one VSR-1000 unit. With seven VSH-
1000 units connected to the VSR-1000 and six BKSH-
102G 2GB HDD (hard disk drive) Units installed in
each VSH-1000 unit, it is possible to store MPEG-2
video clips with a total running time of 30 hours (at a
data rate of 5 Mbps).
Long recording/playback capability
With six hard disk drives installed, one VSH-1000 unit
has the capacity to store up to 4 hours 20 minutes (at a
data rate of 5 Mbps) of audio and video information as
a single clip.
Recording and playback can be done with short clips
of minimum lengths of 4 seconds.
High speed and random access
High speed and random access capability allows a
back-to-back playback of multiple clips.
High data rate
Data processing speed is selectable for either 10 Mbps
or 5 Mbps. With the BKSR-103 Clip Exchange Board
(option) installed, you can simultaneously record two
5-Mbps MPEG-2 bitstreams.

and associated devices, the unit can be used to create a
high picture quality, high-speed and high capacity
multichannel video file server system.
Maximum of 12- or 6-channel
simultaneous playback capability
Installing six BKSR-102 Two-Channel Decoder
Boards (option) allows you to use a maximum of 12
channels simultaneously for playback of clips at a data
rate of 5 Mbps per channel.
Alternatively you can install six BKSR-101/101P One-
Channel Decoder Boards (option) for simultaneous
playback of up to 6 channels at a data rate of 10 Mbps
per channel. With this setup you can output gen-
locked playback signals.
Multiple applications
The unit comes with a switchable RS-232C/RS-422A
port for interfacing with a host computer, allowing
system control with a wide variety of application
software.
GPI function
The unit can receive playback start/stop and other
instructions from external control devices using a GPI
(General Purpose Interface).
Remote diagnosis capability
The RS-232C communication port allows status
diagnosis from an external device.
Mountable in 19-inch standard rack
The unit can be mounted in an EIA standard 19-inch
rack (10 units high).
