A right muddle!
A hat memory game – difficult version
Players: 2 – 4
Material: Board, 12 pixies, 12 hats
Duration: approx. 10-15 mins.
What a muddle! All the pixies have put on a random hat. Their pixie parent at home
will not like all that untidiness. Time to change the hats!
The aim of the game is to get the right hat back to the right pixie.
Preparation
Place the pixies in a circle on the paths along the edge of the board. Mix the hats up
and then, without looking or feeling, place them randomly on the pixies' heads.
How to play
The first player starts. They choose a pixie's hat and feel the hidden surface without
anyone else being able to see. The surface of the pixie can be seen and felt by
everyone.
Does the hat go with this pixie?
Yes! That's lucky! The player shows the others, who check the hat.
If the player is right, they can keep the hat and pixie.
If the player is wrong, they put the hat back on the pixie.
It's now the next player's turn.
No! It's not this pixie's hat.
The player keeps the first pixie's hat in their hand. They then take a second hat off a
pixie's head, but don't feel it; instead, they simply put it on a 'grassy surface' in the
middle of the board. The player looks at and feels the surface of this second pixie to
see if it goes with the first pixie's hat that they have in their hand.
Does the hat go with this pixie?
Yes! Excellent! The player shows the others, who check the hat.
If the player is right, they can keep the hat and pixie. The other hat is taken
off the 'grassy surface' and put on the first pixie's bare head.
If the player is wrong, they put both hats back on both pixies.
It's now the next player's turn.
No! It's not this second pixie's hat.
That's a shame. Both hats are put back on the same pixies' heads as before:
Hat 1 on pixie 1 and hat 2 on pixie 2. It's now the next player's turn.
Players will probably quickly realize that it is more helpful to remember the pixies'
surfaces than the hats' surfaces.
At the end
The game ends when all pixies have been matched with the right hat. Now count up
who has won the most pixies. The player with the most pixies has won, the player
with the second most pixies is second etc.
