1. Wash the outboard motor with fresh
water to remove salt or dirt.
2. Remove the engine oil drain screw and
completely drain water and oil from the
engine.
3. Remove the spark plugs, and com-
pletely drain the water from the engine
by pulling emergency starter rope (See
page 40) several times.
Replace oil filter and oil to the correct
level.
The oil and filter may need to be
changed again after running a short
period to get all moisture completely
out of the crankcase.
4. Inject a sufficient amount of engine oil
through the spark plug holes.
Pull the emergency starter rope several
times to circulate the oil throughout the
outboard motor.

Do not attempt to start submerged out-
board motor immediately after it is recov-
e r e d , o r e n g i n e c o u l d b e s e v e r e l y
damaged.

6. Cold weather precautions

If you moor your boat in cold weather at
temperatures below 0°C (32°F), there is
the danger of remained water freezing in
the cooling water pump, which may dam-
age the pump, impeller, etc. To avoid this
problem, submerge the lower half of the
outboard motor into the water.

7. Striking underwater object

Striking the sea bottom or an underwater
object may severely damage the outboard
motor. Follow the procedure below and
consult a dealer as soon as possible.
1. Stop the engine immediately.
2. Check the control system, gear case,
boat transom etc.
3. Return to the nearest habor slowly and
carefully.
4. Consult a dealer check the outboard
motor before operation again.
